Latin America Conference 2021
Around 400 activists attended this year’s crucial Latin America Conference at Friends House in London on Saturday after unfortunately having to postpone the event in 2020 due to the on-going pandemic. The conference came at a crucial time for the region with progressive electoral victories in Nicaragua, Venezuela and most recently in Honduras.
Adrian Weir, from Unite the Union, opened the conference by welcoming recent progressive election victories
‘Socialists, trade unionists and progressives around the world have been inspired by left election victories across the continent again in recent years - the so called 'pink tide' is back, and with a vengeance.’
He introduced former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell MP, Ambassador Rocio Maniero, and Kate Hudson from CND. Spanish MP and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Spain, Enrique Santiago joined the plenary via video message.
“The region has changed, firstly with the arrival of AMLO in Mexico, the construction of progressive governments in Argentina, and Venezuela and Cuba emerging from brutal aggression by the United States”.
General Secretary of the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers' Union (BAFWU), Sarah Woolley was joined by TUC’s Mariela Kohon, Simon Dubbins, Unite, and Guisell Morales-Echaverry, Nicaraguan Ambassador for the second plenary titled, “Latin American Workers Fighting Back!”
Delegates were also treated to video messages from across Latin America fromManuel Diaz Tapia, Vice President of CUT Chile, Rosana Fernandez, Anti-Racism Committee, CUT Brazil and Julia Cabarcas, President of the Colombian Women’s Association.

Sisterhood, Socialism & Struggle
The Communist Party of Britain has organised a New Year feminist conference celebrating Sisterhood, Socialism & Struggle in the UK and across the world. This free weekend event on January 16-17 2021, will provide a virtual opportunity for women and men on the left to discuss and debate the importance of women’s liberation for the whole human race.
This event aims to put women’s liberation at the heart of class struggle and explore how we should respond to the intensification of women’s oppression under modern capitalism.
Based upon the three strands of the Charter for Women, which was adopted by the National Assembly of Women in 2020, sessions include Marxist-feminist analysis of women in society, at work, and in the international labour movement. Drawn from across the labour movement our speakers include Mary Davis on the roots of women’s oppression, Pragna Patel on domestic violence, migration and racism, Sarah Woolley on sexual harassment and Kellie O'Dowd on abortion rights.
Sessions include "Women in the workplace": with Denise Christie, Rohan Kon, Helen O'Connor and Sarah Woolley.[5]
Additional panels will highlight such questions as the feminisation of poverty, unfair job segregation and the erosion of women’s sex-based rights, calling for urgent change to secure equal pay and access to decent childcare.
As internationalists, we recognise that the fight against women’s oppression is worldwide and we are delighted to be joined by communist women leaders from three continents, including Liz Rowley, (Canada), Jenny Schreiner (South Africa), Annie Raja (India) and Socorro Gomes (Brazil).[6]
