Joe Neguse

Joe Neguse is the son of Eritrean refugees, who settled in Colorado.

Joe Neguse is an attorney, civic leader, and public servant who has spent his career fighting to expand opportunities for families across our state. He has lived in the 2nd Congressional District for the last 15 years, and was honored to represent the people of the district as an elected member of CU’s Board of Regents. He and his wife Andrea (who grew up in Broomfield) call the City of Lafayette home.[1]

Ro Khanna, Tefere Gebre of Greenpeace, Grace Tuttle of Protect Our Water, Heritage, Rights and Naadiya Hutchinson, Government Affairs Manager at WE ACT for Environmental Justice were listed as speakers for a "Special Town Hall" dated September 15, 2022 sponsored by Our Revolution. The meeting is to discuss strategies to stop the public from using strategic litigation to shut down development prjects. Our Revolution, Greenpeace, Protect Our Water, Heritage, Rights (POWHR) and WE ACT for Environmental Justice participated. In a mass email, Our Revolution linked to a letter signed by democrats to thwart development projects.

"Dems can’t celebrate “the biggest climate steps in history” while reversing them by caving to a literal coal baron.

"Our coalition of 650 organizations is urging Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to detach the deal from the must-pass bill to fund the government — we cannot let Manchin hold us hostage!

"Bernie railed against it on the Senate floor this week and says he’ll vote it down, and Our Revolution is calling for a progressive mutiny in Congress.

"A coalition of 72 US House Reps have signed onto a letter[3] led by US Rep. Raul Grijalva - but we need more of our representatives in Congress to stand in opposition.

The Medicare for All Act of 2021 was introduced March 17th, by Pramila Jayapal and Debbie Dingell. Sunday, we will turn our focus to this issue. As the 33 year-old son of refugees from Eritrea, Joe Neguse is not your typical candidate for Congress – in fact, he would be the first African-American elected to Congress in Colorado’s 141-year history. An attorney, civic leader, and public servant, Joe is running for Congress in Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District because he believes that all Coloradans deserve a fair shot at pursuing the American dream – attending college, participating in our economy, and shaping our democracy - and that dream is under attack now as never before.

After graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder summa cum laude and working for the then-Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives, Andrew Romanoff, Joe co-founded New Era Colorado, the state’s largest youth voter registration and mobilization non-profit in Colorado - successfully registering more than 100,000 young people to vote and get mobilized to the polls.

While still in law school, Joe was elected by the people of the 2nd District to serve on Colorado University’s Board of Regents. During his tenure as Regent he fought to make higher education more affordable and accessible, lower student health insurance costs, make voter registration more accessible and led initiatives to increase wages for the University’s lowest-paid workers. He went on to direct Colorado’s Consumer Protection Agency, becoming the youngest State Cabinet members in the country, leading initiatives to combat financial fraud against seniors.[10]

In 2018 Joe Neguse (D-CO-02) was supported by Council for a Livable World.

Joe Neguse, a son of refugees from Eritrea, Africa, is running to represent Colorado’s Second Congressional District, which is being vacated by Jared Polis (D), who is running for governor. The district is considered a safe Democratic seat.
In 2008, 33 year-old Neguse was elected by the Second Congressional District to the Colorado University Board of Regents, where he served a six-year term, including two years as Chair of the Audit Committee. Later, Neguse was appointed to lead the state’s consumer protection agency, where he was in charge of 600 employees and a $90 million budget.
Neguse strongly supports the Iran nuclear agreement and backs smart, effective reductions in Pentagon spending..[11]

Trip to Ethiopia and Eritrea

March 5, 2019 , Representative Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, and Representatives Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) returned from a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) to Ethiopia and Eritrea. The goal of the visit was to support regional peace and security in the Horn of Africa and to encourage countries to place human rights at the center of the reforms.

“It was important our first Congressional Delegation trip of this Congress be to the Horn of Africa because of the change the region is going through following the historic peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea that ended 20 years of conflict,” said Representative Bass. “Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came into office with a serious reform agenda aimed at ending political repression. Since coming into office, the Prime Minister has freed thousands of political prisoners, opened the media, and appointed women to half of the cabinet posts. I was in Ethiopia shortly after the Prime Minister took office and looked forward to an update on his progress. Our delegation was fortunate to meet with the President of Ethiopia and several of the new female cabinet members.

“In addition to wanting to send the signal that we support Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s reform agenda, our delegation was also meant to encourage the new peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The last U.S. Congressional Delegation to visit the country was in 2005, when my predecessor on the Subcommittee, the late Congressman Donald Payne of New Jersey, traveled to Eritrea. Our delegation had a number of productive conversations with Eritrean government officials. We discussed the need for transformation and urged officials to be vigilant about human rights abuses in Eritrea and to implement respect for civil liberties. We also discussed Eritrea’s unlimited national service requirement, which is one of the main reasons why thousands have fled the country. The government officials we met with informed us that the policy is under review now that the security situation in Eritrea has improved. We also met with young Eritreans and were able to hear about their daily lives and their hope for the future.

“This Congressional Delegation to the Horn of Africa was critical because it signals to the region as a whole that we are supportive of positive reforms.”

“I echo Chairwoman Bass’ statement, and appreciated the opportunity to join her on this diplomatic CODEL trip to Ethiopia and Eritrea,” said Representative Neguse. “I look forward to further discussions with my colleagues and the State Department on how to further promote peace, security, human rights, and democratic reforms in the region.”

“I was impressed with the regional thaw in East Africa after Eritrea and Ethiopia made peace,” said Representative Omar. “As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, my focus has been on peace and human rights and shifting our focus on humanitarian aid to developmental aid. It was a great honor to join Chairwoman Bass for the first official CODEL to the Horn of Africa. America has been supportive of Prime Minister Abiy’s reform agenda, and I believe we must use this opportunity to foster prosperity in the region and make investments that will fundamentally transform our relationship with the region.”[13]
