Endorsing Keith Ellison

Millennial Leaders Endorse Keith Ellison for DNC Chair was posted February 2017.

Young people have been at the forefront of every major struggle in our country to make real the promise of democracy. During the last election cycle, our generation played a pivotal role in bringing economic and racial justice to the forefront of political dialogue, and now we are marching in the streets, rallying at airports, and at town halls resisting Donald Trump’s cabinet and his agenda of hatred and greed.

That’s why we endorse Representative Keith Ellison for DNC Chair. We believe he can activate the millennial base of the party by working with the movements we have powered.

Signatories included Jonathan Abboud , Vice President, Santa Barbara Community College Board of Trustees.

Standing for AD 37

In 2019 Jonathan Abboud stood from AD 37 for the California Democratic Party Central Committee.

My name is Jonathan Abboud and I am ready to represent our community as the 37th Assembly District Executive Board Representative to the California Democratic Party. I’m a 26 year old UC Santa Barbara Alumnus and I serve as the elected representative for Isla Vista and Hope Ranch on the Santa Barbara City College Board of Trustees. Born in Los Angeles to working class Lebanese immigrants, now living in Isla Vista, I’m proud to call California my home and want to do everything I can to make it a better place for all.

For six years now I’ve volunteered for local Democratic initiatives and campaigns. This year I funded and coordinated an effort to register and turnout record breaking numbers of people in Isla Vista/UCSB for both the June and November midterm elections. The past five years I’ve organized to give Isla Vista self-governance and representation through the creation of the IV Community Services District. I am excited about the opportunity to be involved in building a state party for the future that will lead the country in tangible and progressive action.[1]

Calling all my VC and Santa Barbara people! If you live in Ojai, Oxnard, Santa Paula, Ventura, Santa Barbara, or Carpenteria, and you are a registered Democrat, please turn out tomorrow to vote for Arthur Valenzuela, James Forsythe, Karina Kaye, and the other members of the district's progressive slate in tomorrow's ADEM elections! When Bernie Sanders talked about making the Democratic Party the party of the people, this is what he meant. Don't stay home, be part of the change you want to see!

Board of Trustees position for District-6 in Isla Vista

In 2014 Jonathan Abboud was a 22 year-old Political Science major fresh out of UCSB.

Having just graduated earlier the past June, Abboud has already made a splash for himself in local politics. Abboud won the Board of Trustees position for District-6 in Isla Vista, beating opponent Ethan Stone.

“It actually wasn’t as intense as previous elections until the last day,” said Abboud about the race.

Jonathan ran on a platform of strong community ties and having student interests in mind. The newly elected Board of Trustee member resides in Isla Vista, and has been working in the local community over the course of his education on the issue of Isla Vista self-governance.

Student Trustee Nicholas Steil was excited for someone who would be “seeing the perspective of the college community.”

“It’s inspiring to see someone so young running for public office,” Steil said.

Abboud started in journalism where he worked on his high school newspaper. It wasn’t until a friend encouraged him to run for ASB President at UCSB that he got involved in politics. After losing his first race, he came back the next election to win the presidency.

When he decided to run for the Trustee position, Abboud approached the Democratic Party of Santa Barbara for an endorsement. Daraka Larimore-Hall is the Secretary for the California Democratic Party said that Abboud has a long record of representing key constituents.

“I had met most of them by the time I went for the endorsement,” Abboud said. “Preparing so much made it easy.”[2]

Two months ago myself and many other community college trustees descended on Washington DC with a year round pell grant as our main ask. I met with Salud's staff that week about it and they enthusiastically said this is an issue important to Salud Carbajal -- now he's introduced a bill that incorporates our ask and goes even further, thank you Salud!
