For a People’s Brexit

Although the majority of voters opted to leave the European Union (EU) in last year’s referendum it’s by no means a done deal, with the Tories deeply divided over the issue and the majority of Labour’s MPs openly ‘Remainers’ regardless of what the Corbyn leadership may say.

This was the central theme of a meeting at London’s Conway Hall held by the Communist Party of Britain’s (CPB) London District November 2017. The speakers included CPB leader Robert Griffiths, Luton Labour MP Kelvin Hopkins and Lindsey German from the Stop the War campaign, as well as union official Eddie Dempsey from the RMT.

Kelvin Hopkins, the co-chair of Labour Leave, pointed out that in the past the majority of the labour movement opposed the then Common Market. He said: “The EU is about transferring power from state governments to the European Commission, not to the European Parliament. Its aims are to liberalise, marketise and privatise.”

Hopkins quoted Jean Monnet, one of the founding fathers of the EU, who was never actually elected to public office, saying in 1952: “Europe’s nations should be guided towards the superstate without their people understanding what is happening.”

Robert Griffiths said: “Jeremy Corbyn has pointed out that many Labour policies are not compatible with continued membership of the EU. The only solution is to get out with no enormous divorce bill, no EU rules and no European Defence Policy.

“The Communist Party will be holding discussions with the Labour Party, trade unions and its allies to push for this. There are many working class activists, trade unionists, and communists who want to get out of the EU, a big business, fortress Europe imperialist capitalist club.”[3]

SARU leaders

In June 2015 Solidarity with the Antifascist Resistance in Ukraine formed a steering group: David Ayrton, Bridget Dunne (secretary), Eddie Dempsey, Alex Gordon, Jorge Martin, Ben Gliniecki, Jack Dearlove, Tom Piers, Richard Brenner, Theo Russell, Gerald Downing and Paul Williams.[4]

SARU meeting

Supporters of Solidarity with the Antifascist Resistance in Ukraine (SARU) met at the Marx Memorial Library in central London June 2015 to hear a report from members of an international delegation to the Donbas, organised by the Italian punk/skinhead group Banda Bassotti.

The 107 delegates from all over the world delivered medicines and other supplies, took part in the Donbas International Forum under the slogan “Anti-Racism – Internationalism – Solidarity,” a conference of Novorossiya left forces, and attended the Victory Day events in Alchevsk, an industrial centre in Lugansk on 9th May.

Much of their time was spent with Alexei Mozgovoy, the charismatic and hugely popular commander of the 3,000-strong Ghost Battalion, who was one of the organisers of the forum and the opening speaker.

But only days after returning to Britain, they heard that Mozgovoy had died on 23rd May in an ambush in Lugansk. His funeral drew enormous crowds of supporters.

One of the delegates, Eddie Dempsey, said Mozgovoy was greatly respected for his “implacable opposition to oligarchy, demanding the restoration of all wealth stolen from the people since the fall of the Soviet Union, and a return to the days of free healthcare and education”.

He declared his allegiance to the cause of building a “people’s and socialist Novorossiya”, the federation of the Lugansk and Donetsk people’s republics in the Donbas. “Born and bred in Lugansk, Commander Mozgovoy’s background exposed claims by western politicians and their puppets in Kiev that the Novorossiyan resistance is no more than a Russian invasion,” Dempsey said.

He said they were told that the Ukraine anti-fascist solidarity movements in Greece and Britain are the largest in Europe.[5]

Solidarity with Anti-Fascist Resistance in Ukraine

More than 150 people packed a lecture room in central London June 2014 for the launch of a broad based campaign, Solidarity with the Antifascist Resistance in Ukraine.

The speakers were Richard Brenner from the campaign, Lindsey German from Counterfire, Boris Kagarlitsky from the Institute for Globalization Studies and Social Movements (IGSO), in Moscow who joined via Skype as he had been unable to get a visa, Andrew Murray from the Communist Party of Britain, Alan Woods from Socialist Appeal and the International Marxist Tendency and Sergei Kirichuk from the socialist movement Borotba (Struggle) in Ukraine who also spoke over a Skype link.

Richard Brenner opened with the announcement of the most recent air strike by the Kiev junta on Lugansk, resulting in heavy casualties, including many civilians. Air strikes like this have been made on an orphanage and a children’s hospital among other targets.

“But,” Brenner said, “the western media from the BBC to Fox News are promoting the Nato lie that the cause of the problem is a Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine.” He pointed out that most of the population of eastern Ukraine are and always have been Russian speakers.

Many speakers made the point that the recent “elections” run by the junta to give it some legitimacy barred all left parties from standing; the communists have been outlawed, their headquarters seized and burned and one leading member murdered. Other left and moderate parties have come under similar attack.

During the brief question-and-answer session at the end Eddie Dempsey from the RMT Paddington Number One branch who, on behalf of his branch, called for a broad based, democratic campaign, rooted in the labour movement that his branch could affiliate to, and move an emergency resolution to RMT national conference.
