Running for DSA leadership
In 2020 Opal Brockschmidt ran for External Co-Chair on the Portland Democratic Socialists of America steering committee.
- External Co-Chair
- Candidate’s Statement: I am running for external organizing co-chair, because I have seen first hand the power of building collective power and community. As the childcare worker organizer on the Up Now campaign, I organize monthly meetings of workers across the county to come together to kvetch about our working conditions, and together we wrote part of the ballot language! I have been an external organizer for the Growing Seeds Worker Union, and have build a strong coalition of passionate childcare workers in Portland. Along side the worker organizing I do, I am an active everyday antifascist, and I work with other anti fascists inside and outside of DSA. I have organized for the ICE occupation, the spectacle, and most recently the anti-kkk rally. In my years organizing in Portland, I have built strong connections throughout the city, networking antifascists together for solidarity actions. In this position as external co-chair, I want to strengthen the relationships we have with other antifascist community groups. As we move further into 2020 we cannot be in the center when we comes to fascism, we must be loud about it. If we ignore it, then it will grow more emboldened. I want to encourage you to get involved with the antifascist work going on in our chapter, and in our community at large. I will bring more opportunities and trainings in antifascist work and history to our chapter this year. .
