Running for DSA leadership

In 2020 Olivia Katbi Smith ran for Co-Chair of Portland Democratic Socialists of America steering committee.

Candidate's statement: I am an unapologetic Arab, Marxist, feminist who is running for re-election to be your chapter co-chair in 2020. I joined DSA immediately after Trump’s election, and I’m proud to have helped build the chapter and lead us to the place we are now. But our fight is only just beginning.
As your co-chair in 2018 and 2019, I am proud to have led a robust, healthy, truly “big tent” chapter, where we support work across tendencies and engage in a diversity of tactics across all fronts. I continued to commit our chapter to taking principled stances of anti-imperialism and in particular standing in solidarity with the movement for Palestinian liberation, making our chapter the foremost DSA chapter in the nation on this issue and gaining international attention for our actions, especially when we won a year long BDS campaign against the Portland Trail Blazers. I organized at my own workplace (and was fired for doing so), stood up against fascists in the streets, and helped our chapter build relationships with key faith, labor and community leaders and organizations locally, nationally, and internationally.

Diminishing Antifa

In Portland, Oregon on June 30, 2019 journalist Andy Ngo was one of eight people who needed medical care in the wake of a brawl involving Milkshaking. In a local article about the events that took place, Olivia Katbi Smith, co-chair of the Portland Democratic Socialists of America, told the Tribune that she hoped to promote the concept of "everyday anti-facism, since "antifa" can be an intimidating term.
