DSA Socialist Feminists Call on Joe Biden to Drop Out

DSA Socialist Feminists Call on Joe Biden to Drop Out was a May 2020 letter to Joe Biden.

Presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden stands accused of sexual assault. Members of the Democratic Socialists of America demand that he leave the race.

As socialists, we believe that the lessons of the #MeToo movement must not be forgotten. This movement challenged rape culture and upended myths about sexual violence and the credibility of survivors. For a short period, these issues were even embraced by many liberal politicians and commentators, as evidenced by the widespread support for Dr. Christine Blasey-Ford when she bravely spoke out about incumbent Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. #MeToo made previously tolerated behavior intolerable, and powerful men in numerous industries faced consequences for their misconduct....

We, the undersigned, call on Joe Biden to leave the race. We also call on elected officials endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America to rescind any endorsements of Joe Biden.

I'm a teacher who’s spent the last 30 years working with immigrant and refugee students and a longtime union member recently elected to my local’s steering committee. Since 2017, I’ve served the chapter in various ways including co-chairing the Electoral Working Group, running check in, acting as Portland DSA’s delegate to the Portland Metro People’s Coalition, and serving on the Portland DSA for Bernie Campaign Coordinating Committee. During my time as the campaign’s first mobilizing lead, we significantly increased event turnout and participation. For most of the last year, along with Bryan Blanc, I’ve been co-chair of the membership working group with a focus on helping new and potential members find a home within the chapter.
Previous Internal Organizing Co-Chairs have brought us a long way during my time in Portland DSA, and I’m excited about the future. My goals for supporting our chapter include continuing to grow the Mobilizing program, reviving the Events and Activities Working Group, developing the Burnout Support Group into a valuable member resource, expanding education and skill building opportunities, and working to nourish a culture of organizing. We stand at a crucial time for our chapter. We saw huge membership bumps in 2016 and 2018, and I expect 2020 to be no different. More and more people will come to realize that socialism is our only path forward. I want newcomers to be welcomed into an active, resilient organization that engages all our members in meaningful work as we grow into a powerful force for improving the lives of working class people in Portland and beyond.
