Democratic Socialists of Metro Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky welcomes the decision of the Newport commissioners to open a syringe exchange program in a mobile unit at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. This proposal would never have come to a vote if not for the awareness raised by DSA at city commissioners’ meetings, on social media, and by canvassing among ordinary working class citizens of Newport’s West Side. While we regard the adoption of the exchange as a victory, we also believe that this is only a first step to a robust public health response to this crisis. On Tuesday, February 27th, we call upon the commissioners of the city of Covington to follow through on their commitment and establish an accessible and effective syringe exchange program that will promote the broader goal of health justice for all. — with Charlie Campbell, Simon Nathaniel Powell, Hayley Cristina Barcelona, Dewey Rhys Estep and Rose Curtin.
