Stephen Thompson
Socialist organizer
I am relatively new to the Chicago chapter, but you might know me from my work facilitating small group discussions at Socialist Night School and the No Shortcuts Organizer School. As a member of the Political Education and Policy Committee, I also help with content development and phone banking. Before moving to Chicago, I was a member of Baltimore DSA, and was also active in my union, the Baltimore Teachers Union. As a rank-and-file activist, I organized with my co-workers against a draconian new evaluation policy that the school board was trying to implement, and was part of the effort by socialists across the country to have our unions endorse Bernie for the 2020 presidential election. Ultimately, my AFT local did not endorse Bernie, but the campaign helped us to build a core group of teacher activists within the union, who raised the profile of socialist politics and successfully pushed the city to provide more laptops for our students during the pandemic.[1]
"Support Bill Ayers"
In October 2008, several thousand college professors, students and academic staff signed a statement Support Bill Ayers in solidarity with former Weather Underground Organization terrorist Bill Ayers.
In the run up to the U.S. presidential elections, Ayers had come under considerable media scrutiny, sparked by his relationship to presidential candidate Barack Obama.
- We write to support our colleague Professor William Ayers, Distinguished Professor of Education and Senior University Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who is currently under determined and sustained political attack...
- We, the undersigned, stand on the side of education as an enterprise devoted to human inquiry, enlightenment, and liberation. We oppose the demonization of Professor William Ayers.
Stephen Thompson of National-Louis University signed the statement[2].
