Activism
Michael Leonardi was born and raised in Toledo. He became active in the Student Environmental Action Coalition in the ‘90s. After 8 years in Italy, during which he organized the Gaia Conference, he and his family returned to Toledo, where he rabble-rouses and writes, especially about environmental issues.[1]
A long time political activist originally from Toledo Ohio. His activist work has included serving on the national council of the Green Party USA in the early years of its formation and working on past Nader campaigns. He has campaigned for a plethora of ecological causes, including anti-nuclear work around the Davis Besse and Fermi 2 Nuclear power plants. Michael lived in Italy since where his activist work has continued. He served on the coordinating committee of the United Citizens for Peace and Justice organization in Roma working against the terror wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and calling for an end to the inhumane and brutal occupation of Palestine. With US citizens for Peace and Justice Roma, he has also been active in the campaign to stop the expansion of the Dal Molin United States military base in Vicenza. Michael now lives in Calabria in the South of Italy with his wife and baby girl. He became the proud father of Gaia Valmaree on July 15 of 2008. Michael currently teaches English for the faculty of Political Science at the University of Calabria in Cosenza and at the Vocational high school for training hotel and restaurant workers on the coast of Maratea in Basilicata. His activist work is continuing in the south of Italy where the story of an ecological catastrophe under the waters of the Mediterranean is coming to light.[2]

Black Lives Matter
About a dozen demonstrators protested a man's recent death while in police custody at a Toledo hospital, April 2015.
The demonstrators protesting Sunday outside Toledo's government center carried posters with messages including "Justice 4 Aaron Pope" and "Black Lives Matter." Aaron Pope died March 27 after Toledo officers responded to a 911 call saying he was acting out of control.
Rally organizer Michael Leonardi told The Blade in Toledo that the group was protesting what he called a lack of transparency when people are killed by police or die in police custody.[4]

[When Mayor de Blasio appointed a commission to review monuments on city-owned land, the biggest outcry predictably came from some Italian Americans defending the Columbus monument, and claiming that the Mayor must hate his Italian heritage. 25 years ago, countering the 500th anniversary celebrations of Columbus’s invasion and occupation, a few of us founded Italian Americans for a Multicultural U.S. (IAMUS), rejecting Columbus as a hero and as a representative of our Italian-ness. If you think that a similar statement by Italian Americans on the monument issue today would be useful--then respond in comments or message me.
Here’s an outreach flyer to Italian Americans about Columbus that we wrote in the 90s.]
