History
Threshold - the conference that launchedthe (Student Environmental Action Coalition) as a national movement, circa Fall, 1989 in Chapel Hill, NC. Catalyst - SEAC's 2nd national gathering, held a year later in Champaign-Urbana, IL, drawing an astounding 7000+ young people from around the world who cared about saving the earth. Featuring UNC-SEAC'ers C-line & Erik J. Berg (who both helped organize Threshold, and roadtripped to Catalyst). Founded at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1988, Student Environmental Action Coalition became the nation's largest student- and youth-led environmental group. By the early 90s, SEAC chapters existed at over 2000 US colleges and high schools. Over the years its national office has moved from Chapel Hill to Philadelphia to Charleston, West Virginia.[1]
Baumannconnection
Chris Baumann on activism at UNC Chapel Hill.
- You know, it just doesn’t [snaps fingers] happen like that. I mean, we had, you know, our teachers, and with Margo Crawford and the Campus Y leaders, Al McSurely, I mean, we definitely had older folks around us kind of moving us along, and, of course, Marsha and Annie and Larry, I mean, they were all older than us. But also you’ve got to learn, right? That’s where you learn. But, I mean, we didn’t know what we were doing. I mean, look, SEAC grew out of nothing, right, just putting an ad in the newspaper. The Black Cultural Center started with a small meeting, and all these things happened. And again, while we won victories with the housekeepers, there’s still a lot of work.[2]
