Yvonne Scarlett-Golden
Yvonne Scarlett-Golden died in 2006 in Daytona Beach Florida where she was Mayor. Ms. Golden was a longtime teacher, principal and African American social justice leader in San Francisco.
Early life
Yvonne Scarlett-Golden was born and raised in Daytona Beach February 1, 1926.
A graduate of Bethune Cookman College, she was one of the few alums actually under the tutelage of Mary McLeod Bethune, president and founder of the prestigious predominantly African American college.
She left Florida for California where she was first a teacher, then High School principal in San Francisco, California[1].
Hard Times Conference
In 1976 Yvonne Golden for San Francisco Black Teachers Caucus attended the Weather Underground and Prairie Fire Organizing Committee organized Hard Times Conference Jan 30 - Feb 1 at the University of Chicago.[2]
Jim Jones controversy
Among her political activities was encouraging San Francisco’s blacks to support the controversial Rev. Jim Jones and to depart with him for Guyana and Jonestown[3].

In 1994 Yvonne Scarlett-Golden was a member of the National Coordinating Committee of the Committees of Correspondence.[8]
Daytona Beach politics
Golden was first elected Daytona Beach city commissioner in 1995 and won re-election bids every two years thereafter until she decided to aim for the top post.
Scarlett-Golden was elected Daytona Beach's first African American female mayor in 2003. In her re-election campaign that she won 57 per cent of the vote in 2005[9].
