On April 23, NIAC Action hosted the first of a series of NIAC In Conversation webinars with our NIAC Action endorsees. Our guest host, Sanam Anderlini, the Director of the Centre for Women, Peace and Security at the London School of Economics and Political Science, led a conversation with NIAC Action endorsee, Congressman Tom Malinowski (D-NJ) of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, on foreign policy, including the impact of Iran sanctions and implications for human rights and peacebuilding.

Rep. Tom Malinowski (D–N.J.) told the audience that the United States has “both a moral obligation and a strategic opportunity to ease up on the sanctions that have been imposed” on Iran.

But Malinowski, who served as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor from 2014 to 2017, also emphasized that he is a “strong and passionate supporter” of U.S. sanctions against the “genocidal” Syrian government.

“I can support sanctions under many circumstances, but the idea that you can starve an authoritarian regime into collapse is just belied by all of our experiences, even in cases where sanctions have been successful at influencing authoritarian regimes to change” their behavior, he said.[1]
