Tim Walz

Tim Walz is a Democratic Governor of Minnesota.

Background

The son of a public school administrator and community activist, Congressman Tim Walz was born in West Point, Nebraska on April 6, 1964. Raised in a rural community, Walz spent his summers farming with his extended family. In 1982, Tim Walz graduated from Butte High School along side his 24 classmates.

Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard at the young age of 17, serving as a member of the Guard for twenty yeaars. After high school, Walz worked a number of odd jobs before accepting a temporary teaching position at the Native American Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. It was his experience at the Pine Ridge reservation that convinced Tim Walz to follow his father’s lead and become an educator.

Prior to his retirement, Tim Walz was the highest ranking enlisted National Guard soldier in southern MinnesotaPrior to his retirement, Tim Walz was the highest ranking enlisted National Guard soldier in southern Minnesota. In 1989, Walz earned a B.S. in social science education from Chadron State College in Nebraska. That year he earned the title of Nebraska Citizen-Soldier of the Year.

After 24 years in the Army National Guard, Command Sergeant Major Walz retired from the 1-125th Field Artillery Battalion in the spring of 2005. Prior to retiring, Walz served overseas with his battalion in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.[1]

Harvard and China

With his teaching degree complete, Harvard University "offered" Walz an opportunity to gain a new perspective on global education by teaching in the People's Republic of China. Working in China during 1989-1990, Walz was a member of one of the first government sanctioned groups of American educators to teach in Chinese high schools.

Following his return, Tim Walz seized the opportunity to develop a program of cooperation between American and Chinese students. Walz established a small business called Educational Travel Adventures, Inc. through which he conducted annual educational trips to China for high school students. The business includes a scholarship program that allows students to travel and study in China regardless of their financial situation.

Walz has also served as a visiting Fellow of International Relations at the Macau Polytechnic University, a position that "helped develop his knowledge of China’s unique international status".[2]

Tim Walz Ties to United Front Influence Operations

From the Daily Caller in article titled "EXCLUSIVE: Tim Walz Has A History Of Rubbing Elbows With Nonprofit Linked To Chinese Intel And Influence Agency" dated August 28, 2024:[3]

"Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, has a long history of attending events organized by members of a nonprofit with connections to a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence and intelligence agency, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation found.
Since 2018, Walz has attended multiple events hosted by members of the Chinese American Association of Minnesota (CAAM) and related organizations, including one 2022 fundraiser for his gubernatorial campaign, according to a DCNF review of dozens of Chinese government announcements, Chinese-language news reports and social media posts.
Other media have detailed self-declared progressive Walz’s long-standing relationships with entities connected to Islamic extremism as well.
Since 2016, CAAM and another local nonprofit have been hosting the St. Paul branch of the “Overseas Chinese Service Center” (OCSC) program, which is a global network of institutions overseen by the Chinese government’s United Front Work Department (UFWD), the DCNF previously reported.
Among other things, the UFWD “collects intelligence, exerts control over overseas Chinese-language media outlets, seeks to influence Chinese diaspora groups, facilitates illicit technology transfer, and interferes in politics in other countries,” according to the House Select Committee on the CCP.
On at least one occasion, a member of the St. Paul, Minnesota OCSC also took part in meetings and training sessions organized by China’s national police authority, the DCNF found. The DCNF has reported on other Chinese government-linked operations, including a June 2024 investigation detailing how an online network run by a self-identified Chinese “cyber police” officer provides Chinese illegal immigrants with resources to get into the U.S. and evade border authorities.
CAAM did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
"The Democratic vice presidential nominee’s dozens of trips to China as an educator have come under intense scrutiny from China hawks and Republican lawmakers like Kentucky Rep. James Comer, who recently sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray requesting information pertaining to “any Chinese entity or individual with whom Mr. Walz may have engaged or partnered.”
Tim Walz is exactly the sort of unscrupulous, China-friendly politician who the UFWD would target,” Indiana Republican Rep. Jim Banks told the DCNF.
“He took several trips to China, likely while holding an active security clearance, and House Republicans should join me in investigating whether he violated foreign travel disclosure requirements,” said Banks, who is a member of the House Select Committee on the CCP.
Both Walz’s office and the Harris-Walz campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
‘Affects Every State’
The Minnesota OCSC branch is one of approximately 60 around the globe that the Chinese government’s Overseas Chinese Affairs Office set up between 2014 and 2017. The DCNF previously identified six other OCSC branches located in California, Texas, Utah, North Carolina, Nebraska and Missouri.
Chinese government documents reveal that in 2018 the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office was reorganized under the UFWD, which the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission has described as a Chinese “intelligence service” that conducts influence operations.
In light of its ties to the Chinese government, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey recently subpoenaed the St. Louis OCSC, telling the DCNF that he believes it is “high time that federal law enforcement, and the FBI specifically, take this threat seriously.”
“We have reason to believe the communist government of China is attempting to establish a network of outposts from which to project influence and target individuals who formerly lived in China,” Bailey said. “Public reports indicate that the threat of communist Chinese influence operations affects every state.”
‘The Chinese American Association of Minnesota’
In June 2022, individuals affiliated with the St. Paul OCSC attended a fundraiser for Walz’s gubernatorial reelection, according to an article published by Minnesota Chinese World, a Chinese-language media outlet that posts articles directly to the Chinese social media app WeChat, which is monitored and controlled by the CCP.
Chinese state media has identified Minnesota Chinese World as a news outlet that has “cooperated” with the UFWD to learn how to “tell China’s story well.” That specific phrasing is CCP terminology that often refers to “external propaganda work,” according to the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.
China’s Foreign Ministry identified Minnesota Chinese World’s editor-in-chief as the “propaganda chief” of the St. Paul OCSC in a 2017 press release.
Minnesota Chinese World reported that the June 2022 Walz fundraiser was organized by CAAM’s former president, who remains active in the group, according to the nonprofit’s records. A photo from the event shows Walz sitting in the grass surrounded by a group of approximately 50 people, many of whom are members of CAAM and the St. Paul OCSC, the DCNF found.
Among those pictured are the St. Paul OCSC propaganda chief as well as CAAM’s current president and multiple former presidents, including one who the Chinese government has identified as a “person in charge” of the St. Paul OCSC.
Founded in 1951, CAAM bills itself as the “oldest and largest Chinese American community organization in Minnesota” and defines its mission as promoting Chinese culture and improving the quality of life for Chinese Minnesotans.
Nearly every year since 2005, the Minnesota State Arts Board has awarded taxpayer grants to CAAM’s dance troupe, government records show. The nonprofit got $15,000 in 2018, when Walz was elected governor, which grew to nearly $50,000 in 2025, according to the State Arts Board. The board’s members are appointed by the governor, with the advice and consent of the state senate.
The Chicago Chinese Consulate Consul General Hong Lei appointed CAAM and a related nonprofit to host the OCSC in St. Paul in 2016, according to state media reports.
Additionally, a prominent St. Paul OCSC member was part of an OCSC delegation that met with Ministry of Public Security officials during a 2018 trip to China, a DCNF analysis found. The DCNF compared profile pictures on CAAM’s website and photos from the 2018 meeting published by the Chinese government and state media outlets.
During that meeting, Ministry of Public Security officials demonstrated how OCSCs facilitate so-called “cross-border remote justice services,” the DCNF previously reported.
In 2023, the FBI arrested the head of a Manhattan Chinese nonprofit called America Changle Association, which allegedly operated a Ministry of Public Security “overseas police station” in New York City, according to the Department of Justice.
While there is no evidence any U.S. OCSCs operate police stations on behalf of the Ministry of Public Security, the DCNF previously reported that some OCSC branches in other countries have opened “Overseas Chinese Police Contact Points.”
China expert and author Gordon Chang described China’s influence and intelligence operations as “comprehensive beyond belief.”
“The Communist Party of China uses all points of contact to subvert the U.S. Almost no American organization is too small to infiltrate, and if there is no organization to take over, China’s communists create one,” Chang told the DCNF.
Minnesota Chinese World’s August 2024 article — which was apparently deleted after the DCNF reached out for comment — details Walz’s attendance at several other events organized by members of CAAM and the St. Paul OCSC.
Walz has formed an unbreakable bond with our Minnesota Twin Cities Overseas Chinese community,” Minnesota Chinese World writes, “he often attends our Chinese community’s public interest activities as a specially invited VIP guest.”
In addition to the 2022 fundraiser, Walz sent video greetings to events organized by the St. Paul OCSC’s propaganda chief in 2022, 2023, and 2024, the article reads. Minnesota Chinese World did not respond to the DCNF’s requests for comment.
Additionally, CAAM’s records reveal its former president also organized a June 2018 fundraiser for another local nonprofit called Global Minnesota, which Walz and St. Paul OCSC leaders, including the center’s propaganda chief, attended based on an analysis of photos from the event.
A social media post made by the Chicago Chinese Consulate shows Consul General Hong Lei delivered a speech at the June 2018 fundraiser, and another photo pictures him speaking one-on-one with then-Minnesota Rep. Walz.
The Chinese Consulate did not respond to the DCNF’s requests for comment.
‘The All-China Federation Of Returned Overseas Chinese’
Three months after the Global Minnesota fundraiser, Walz, St. Paul OCSC leaders and Chicago Chinese Consulate personnel met again at a University of Minnesota Chinese ballet performance in September 2018, Minnesota Chinese World’s article reports.
In the article, St. Paul OCSC’s propaganda chief claims to have organized the event. However, the performance was sponsored by the All-China Federation Of Returned Overseas Chinese (ACFROC), a detail first reported by Seamus Bruner of the Government Accountability Institute.
The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission characterizes ACFROC as a “United Front” organization serving as a “point of contact and coordination” between Chinese living abroad and the CCP.
Photos from the September 2018 ballet performance show Walz on stage with the two St. Paul OCSC officials, a Chinese deputy consul general, former Minnesota Republican Rep. Erik Paulsen and the secretary general of Sichuan’s provincial ACFROC branch.
“U.S. Congressman Waltz [sic] commented that 30 years ago, he celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival for the first time in Foshan, Guangdong,” reads a Chicago Chinese Consulate account of the event. “As Mid-Autumn Festival stands out in Chinese culture as a special day of family reunion, it was his pleasure to enjoy this performance with everyone together.”
Walz ’s speech allegedly “won warm applause” from the audience, according to Minnesota Chinese World.
Chinese-language news outlet Guancha later characterized Walz ’s speech as “a textbook example of American political ethnic lobbying,” and claimed it significantly contributed to Walz ’s popularity with the Chinese community. The article also claims his support in areas with larger ethnic Chinese populations contributed to his 2018 electoral success.
Natalie Winters, who recently discovered documents listing Walz as a speaker alongside a United Front affiliate at a 2019 event, told the DCNF that the UFWD is “the tip of the spear in the CCP’s robust network of foreign influence operations.”
“Whether dealing in blackmail, lucrative business deals, or free trips to China, the effort weaponizes American leaders against their own people by pushing them to advocate for policies favored by the CCP,” said Winters, co-host of the [sic] Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast.

Service

Upon his return to the U.S. in 1990, Walz served full-time in the Army National Guard. He subsequently accepted a position teaching and coaching in Nebraska where he met his wife, Gwen Whipple. In 1993, Walz was named the Outstanding Young Nebraskan by the Nebraska Junior Chamber of Commerce for his service in the education, military, and small business communities.

Married in 1994, Tim and Gwen Walz moved to Mankato, Minnesota two years later. The couple accepted positions teaching and coaching at Mankato West High School where Tim taught until his run for Congress in 2006.

Tim Walz’s inspiring approach to teaching has gained him recognition as the 2002 Minnesota Ethics in Education award winner, 2003 Mankato Teacher of the Year, and the 2003 Minnesota Teacher of Excellence. Walz completed his master's degree in educational leadership in 2001 and is currently working on his doctorate at St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota.[4]

DSA Supports Tim Walz as VP Choice

DSA Supports Tim Walz as VP Choice

Democratic Socialists of America approves Kamala Harris's choice of Tim Walz as running mate for the 2024 presidential elections. DSA sees his selection as a direct response to their "Uncommitted Movement", which is a deliberate DSA strategy to put pressure on Biden, now Harris, to withdrawal support from Israel:[6]

"Harris choosing Walz as a running mate has shown the world that DSA and our allies on the left are a force that cannot be ignored. Through collective action, DSA and the US left more broadly have made it clear that change is needed. DSA members organized in our workplaces and unions to realign the labor movement to support Palestinian liberation.
The Uncommitted movement, in which DSA members played crucial roles nationally and in multiple states, pressured the Democratic establishment into choosing a new candidate and backing down from a potential VP with direct ties to the IDF and who would have ferociously supported the ongoing genocide in Palestine.
"Our demands remain the same: Harris must call for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and put in place an embargo on all arms to Israel.
Democratic Party politics have not changed, but the voices of millions of Americans are now demanding better from the President on Palestine and more. We are raising expectations, and we won't rest until the genocide is ended and all people can be free.

Camp Wellstone connection

Wrote Jim Hightower in the Austin Chronicle, December 22, 2006;[7]

One group that is doing a great job of applying organization to agitation is Wellstone Action. Named for the legendary progressive senator Paul Wellstone, this group holds intensive training sessions around the country to hone the political skills of potential candidates, campaign workers, and citizen activists. Called "Camp Wellstone," these sessions empower regular folks to act on their progressive principles, to challenge even the most entrenched political establishment … and to win.
Begun in 2003, Wellstone Action has been educating and motivating a whole new generation of grassroots leaders who are not beholden to money interests, not tied to old-line political hierarchies, and not afraid to offer a new politics based on ideas and ideals. And now, graduates of these citizenship camps are running winning campaigns all across the country.
Dddddddeerfg.JPG
In the Nov. 7 election, Camp Wellstone alumni ran for local, state, and federal offices, and 78 of them were elected in 18 states. They will now be state senators, country commissioners, secretaries of state, and even members of Congress – three Wellstone grads (John Hall of New York, David Loebsack of Iowa, and Tim Walz of Minnesota) were elected to the U.S. house this year. In addition, one of Wellstone Action's trainers, Keith Ellison, was elected to the house, becoming the first Muslim to serve in Congress.

From Pam Costain, July 22, 2018:

Regarding the Governor’s race, I think we have two phenomenal choices in the tickets of Walz/Flanagan and Murphy/Mae-Quade. I am enthusiastically giving my vote to Walz/Flanagan. I met Tim at one of the first Camp Wellstones in Minnesota, the same camp that brought forth such remarkable candidates as Mark Ritchie, Elizabeth Glidden, Andy Luger, Ralph Remington and others. I remember Tim Walz knocked our socks off at that training with his authenticity, his ability to speak to and connect with a broad range of people, his life experience and his humility. Tim was so impressive that we at Wellstone Action used him and his campaign as an example of the politics of conviction in subsequent Wellstone trainings. I have always respected Tim Walz.[8]

A great story about Tim Walz’s first formal step out from the classroom into politics, back in January 2005 when I found myself as the only prior candidate (the only previous “loser”!) in what became a remarkable class in “candidate school” at Camp Wellstone.

Governor Tim Walz, Elizabeth Glidden, Andy Luger, Mark Ritchie, Ralph Remington, Betsy Tate Anderson trainers Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan, Marcia Louise Avner, Melvin Carter and others…. I mean, come on!!!

It was fun to reminisce to Paul Demko from Politico about that wild time almost 20 years ago, and to see the throughline for so many of us thanks to the Wellstone Family, Jeff Blodgett, Danny Cramer, Rob Richman, Alana Petersen, Pam Costain, Connie Lewis… I could go on and on…

Tim Walz has grown immensely as a leader, orator, candidate and public servant - building on his natural talent and likability - and so much of that is connected to Camp Wellstone and the Wellstone family.

I am so grateful to be a beneficiary myself, and for our country to now benefit, too.

Peggy Flanagan is a longtime friend and colleague. We first met during the 2002 Wellstone campaign where she boldly insisted that young Native women’s leadership was the wave of the future. I was impressed with her immediately. Peggy and I worked together for years at Wellstone Action, served together on the Minneapolis School Board and share several dear friends. I admire her courage, her commitment to justice and her savvy organizational skills. The bond between Tim and Peggy is real and bodes well for their ability to govern as a team.
Though I have decided to vote for Tim and Peggy, I want to make clear my tremendous respect for Erin Murphy. She is an outstanding candidate who has worked tirelessly for what she believes, crisscrossing the state and winning the DFL endorsement with her team of amazing organizers. Erin is a skilled politician in the best sense, and she is a wonderful human being. If she becomes the DFL nominee, I will enthusiastically support her and join many friends who are already with her.

Mark Ritchie

Ritchie said he met Tim Walz in 2005 at Camp Wellstone. He said during the Great Recession, the congressman “was always a voice for those people I knew were having the most difficulty and were also working the hardest.”[9]

Stolen Valor

"We can make sure those weapons of war, that I carried in war, are only carried in war" - Tim Walz

Tim Walz promotes gun control by claiming he "carried weapons of war in war", which is inaccurate. "We can make sure those weapons of war, that I carried in war, are only carried in war", said in part during a speech.

Minneapolis Riots

In the wake of the Minneapolis riots in May 2020, Keith Ellison held a press conference on May 30 with other "community leaders" where he supported the people who were ostensibly protesting the death of George Floyd, and claimed outside elements were responsible for infiltrating the [10]

"People that are trying to tarnish the reputations of the noble protest for justice are out there trying to mix in with the crowd so that people don't just say 'oh look all those protests are bad, their cause can't be just, they're just out there causing trouble.' ...We know that the noble, just aims of the protestors are righteous and good. But we also know that some evil elements are literally defusing themselves with the protest to destroy and cause arson so the whole community has a low opinion of the protest. Because they are not for justice for Mr. Floyd - They're against it!"

From the article:

"Joining Ellison was a long list of community leaders, as well as Gov. Tim Walz, Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
Some were visibly shaken as the gravity of this week’s events became clear.
“They’re not part of our state, and they’re coming from the outside,” Klobuchar said.
Other speakers who came together included Rev. Alfred Babington-Johnson; Mary Merill; Robert Liligren; Lul Osman; Clarence Castile; Imam Asad Zaman; Bo Thao-Urabe; Justin Terrell.

The community leaders denounced systemic racism that they say have long contributed to inequality and tensions, and said outside anarchists were intent on causing destruction.

“We cannot watch our brothers being murdered and, then, on top of that, watch our communities being demolished and then trying to blame us,” said Osman.

Emilia Gonzalez Avalos, executive director of Unidos MN, a nonprofit, spoke about how minority business owners on Lake Street, the heart of the Minneapolis Latino community, sought to defend their livelihoods.

Politics

On November 7, 2006 Tim Walz won election to the United States House of Representatives. He defeated six-term incumbent Gil Gutknecht by a margin of 53% to 47%. On November 4, 2008 Walz was re-elected overwhelmingly in the traditional swing district held by Republicans most of its existence.

Tim Walz represents Minnesota's 1st Congressional District which includes the communities of Worthington, Mankato, Albert Lea, Austin, Rochester and Winona.[11]

Committees

Walz is a member of the House Agriculture Committee, the Veteran's Affairs Committee and was recently named Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, of which Tim is also a member.[12]

Supported by Council for a Livable World

The Council for a Livable World, founded in 1962 by long-time socialist activist and alleged Soviet agent, Leo Szilard, is a non-profit advocacy organization that seeks to "reduce the danger of nuclear weapons and increase national security", primarily through supporting progressive, congressional candidates who support their policies. The Council supported Tim Walz in his successful House of Representatives run as candidate for Minnesota.[13]
