Katherine Tai Appointment Praised by Helmut Scholz

In a March 18, 2021 article titled "Senate decision on Katherine Tai sends an important signal", Helmut Scholz wrote:[4]

"The Senate's decision is a signal that US trade policy could be put on a new footing in the future. Tai's agenda, which focuses on environmental protection, labor rights and the strengthening of a multilateral set of rules for international trade, is intended to bring about a significant change in the bring about the trade policy practiced by the Trump administration, not least in relation to the EU and China.
At the same time, however, the previous cornerstones of an 'America First' approach will be continued, which is also evident in the export restrictions for vaccines, especially in these days of a joint international strategy that is so necessary to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
I expect that future US trade policy will focus on the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, on active participation in the overdue WTO reform in this direction and on overcoming global challenges. The fight against poverty and hunger, climate change and the continuing dramatic extinction of species require joint efforts; a confrontation between trading blocs that takes into account trade wars and markets with different regulatory policies is a waste of strength and resources that we can no longer afford in the third decade of the 21st century. Which is obvious and indispensable in view of the unforeseeable consequences of the corona pandemic and the commitments entered into. "
