Template:TOCnestleft Dan Koh is a descendant of Korean and Lebanese immigrants. After immigrating to Lawrence Massachusetts, Dan’s family worked in the mills, served in the military, and became dedicated members of their community. Over fifty years ago, Dan’s grandfather founded Arrigg Eye & Ear Associates in Lawrence. Dan’s mother and uncles continue to operate that practice today, and they have served thousands in the Merrimack Valley.

Dan Koh grew up in Andover with his parents, his brother Steven Koh, and his sister Katie Koh. Most recently, Dan served as Chief of Staff to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, where he managed 18,000 employees and a $3 billion budget during one of the most prosperous four-year stretches in Boston’s history. Previously, Dan served as Chief of Staff at the Huffington Post. He also served as an advisor to Boston Mayor Tom Menino and as an intern for Senator Ted Kennedy.

With an innovative track record for getting things done, Dan represents a new generation of leadership ready to fight for progressive values. In Congress, Dan can be counted on to stand up to Trump’s disastrous policies and advance a bold, forward-looking agenda. Dan will work to expand access to quality, affordable healthcare and fight for an economy where everyone can earn a living wage and has the opportunity to get ahead. Dan will bring his high-energy attitude to D.C. to work on behalf of the people of the Third District.[1]

Career

In addition to an undergraduate degree from Harvard, and an MBA from Harvard Business School, Dan Koh formerly served as chief of staff for Arianna Huffington and general manager of HuffPost Live.

The Andover, Mass. native talks about the path he took to his current role as chief of staff to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.

Koh: I got lucky – extraordinarily lucky. I had worked for Mayor Menino for a year before going to New York to work for Arianna Huffington. And when I was working for Mayor Menino, the chief of staff was a guy named Mitch Weiss. When Mayor Walsh was elected, he didn’t have a chief of staff candidate, and he asked Mitch for recommendations, and Mitch recommended me.[2]

Education

Dan Koh holds a B.A. from Harvard College and an M.B.A from Harvard Business School, where he met his wife Amy.[3]

Department of Labor

Andover Selectman Dan Koh is heading to Washington and returning to Marty Walsh's service.

Boston Globe and Politico both reported that Koh would be Walsh's chief of staff at the Department of Labor.

Koh previously served as Walsh's chief of staff from 2014 to 2017, during Walsh's first term. Koh narrowly lost a 2018 run for congress before being elected to the Andover Select Board in 2019.[4]

Socialist staffer

Tyler Wilkinson was Field Organizer at Dan Koh for Congress, 2018.

Sting

My dad was very active in anti-tobacco efforts. He was commissioner of public health in Massachusetts from ‘97 until 2003. He gave me the coolest job I’ll ever have. I was 13, doing sting operations in an unmarked police car, trying to buy cigarettes. I look young now – when I was 13, I looked eight. And I was astounded by how many people sold me cigarettes.[6]
