Steven Benen
Background
Steven Benen (born May 15, 1973), was born and raised in Miami, Florida.
He received a B.A. in Political Science from Florida International University.
He attained a Master's degree in Political Management at the George Washington University while he was an intern at the Office of Speechwriting at the Whitehouse under Bill Clinton.[1]
He has worked as a communications director for an unsuccessful Democratic congressional campaign in Pennsylvania, has written direct mail for a major Democratic consulting firm and was, for six years, part of the communications department at Americans United for Separation of Church and State, (1997-2002).[1]
Journalistic background
Benen has written for a variety of publications. These include The Guardian, The American Prospect, the Huffington Post, Talking Points Memo, The Gadflyer and Salon, the Blog Report of which he is a former lead editor.[1]
Other publications to which he has contributed include Political Wire, Alternet, Seven Days and Crooks and Liars.
He has also published and edited The Carpetbagger Report.[1]
Benen has also made appearences on Air America Radio's "Sam Seder Show, NPR's "Talk of the Nation, XM Radio's "POTUS '08 and MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show.[1]
JournoList
Steven Benen was an identified member of JournoList - an email group of approximately 400 "progressive" and socialist journalists, academics and "new media" activists.
JournoList members reportedly coordinated their messages in favor of Barack Obama and the Democrats, and against Sarah Palin and the Republican Party. JournoList was founded in 2007 and was closed down in early 2010.[2]
Current activities
Benen has been a contributing writer for the Washington Monthly since August 2008 as "blogger in chief" of their blog called Political Animal.[1]
Benen lives with his wife in Vermont.[1]
He currently works with Bill Simmon as the co-host of Poli-Sci-Fi Radio in Vermont.[3]
Blogger film
A short film was made about Benen's blogger work called "Digital Pamphleteer" which was created by Bill Simmon.[4]
This won an award at the Vermont International Film Festival.[5]
