Standing for AD 7

In 2019 Rene Cruz Martinez stood from AD 7 for the California Democratic Party Central Committee.

I am a labor Organizer with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. I am a Mexican American living in Sacramento, CA. I have lived in California for most of my life and I love the diversity that this great state brings. I have been a member of the IBEW for over 7 years. I come out of the utility sector where I worked for over 6 years. I began my activism by volunteering my time in local politics since 2012. In 2017, I was recruited by my local union to come work full time as an Organizer. Today I am committed to continue fighting for workers’ rights, preserve good wages and continue to empower our members to fight back against the constant attack on labor unions. In an age where labor continues to be under attack by corporate America, we need more labor activists in politics. We must take back our government and take corporate money out of politics. We must hold our elected officials accountable.
My background also consists of being an activist in my local community. I am a delegate to the Sacramento Labor council and I am also on the Executive Board to the Solano County Electrical Workers Minority Caucus. I have worked on local campaigns to get labor leaders elected into office here locally and at the state level. For the 2018 midterms, I volunteered here in Sacramento and surrounding areas to support elections that resulted in labor leaders in getting into office. Canvassing and going door to door to talk to registered voters is my passion, as it gives me the opportunity to connect and learn more from the people in my community. I strongly believe we need more minorities involved in politics.
I was raised in an immigrant family who came to this country seeking a better life. I graduated from Yuba College with an Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement. I am also a proud member of the LGBT community. I married my partner of 8 years in 2016, this was possible thanks to the political efforts and focus leading to marriage equality. If elected I would like to continue to hold elected officials and candidates for office accountable for worker rights and social justice. I am honored and excited to be part of the Progressive Labor Alliance Slate in Assembly District 7.[1]
