Phil Gasper is chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California,[1] a leading member of the International Socialist Organization chapter in Madison, Wisconsin,[2] a contributor to the Socialist Worker, [3][4] and is a member of the International Socialist Review editorial board.[5] A resident of Madison, Wisconsin, Gasper took an active role in the “occupation of the State Capitol” following passage of a bill designed to control state spending by limiting collective bargaining for public employees in early 2011.[6]

Gasper, who has taught courses on “Ethics and Professional Responsibility,”[7] appears to favor situational ethics on a personal level. As a result, NDNU parents send their children to be taught ethics by someone who has demonstrated an affinity for Marxist thought and participated in ethically questionable activities like “climbing through windows and pushing past cops” during an “occupation of the Capitol building” in Wisconsin.[8]

Academia

Gasper received a B.A. from Cambridge University, followed by a Masters degree from the University of Calgary, and a Ph. D. from Cornell.[9] He has taught at Cornell University, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Middlebury College, the University of California in San Diego, and Stanford University.[10]

Publications

As the Author of The Annotated Communist Manifesto: A Road Map to History's Most Important Political Document,[11] Gasper earned the praise of revisionist historian Howard Zinn, who was listed on the FBI’s “Security Index” because he was considered a high security risk to the country.[12]

“What Gasper does is to remind us how relevant the Manifesto is to our world today. His introduction and afterword are useful guides to the Manifesto and to its importance in our time. His notes give us fascinating tidbits of information which a thoughtful reader will find extremely valuable…. An indispensable addition to anyone’s library.”[13] - Howard Zinn

Phil Gasper also edited the 2009 release of the combined works Imperialism by Vladimir Lenin and War by Nikolai Bukharin.[14]

Activism

Writing in the May-June 2011 issue of the International Socialist Review, Gasper revealed that he is a resident of Madison, Wisconsin. In an article laced with militant language entitled “Class Struggle in Wisconsin,” Gasper explained that the March 2011 demonstrations in and around the Wisconsin State Capitol had the potential to shift from raucous protest to something much more dangerous. According to Gasper, “the mood to escalate action was there, but union leaders were terrified of things going too far.”[16]

“The result was a huge and spontaneous outburst of anger around the city. Several thousand of us retook the State Capitol in the early evening, climbing through windows and pushing past cops, who eventually gave up trying to stop people from entering.[17] - Phil Gasper
