During the 1980's, a lot of Marxist groups held "conferences" on "socialism" with varying names. One joint effort by the maoist-oriented, Marxist "Guardian" (U.S. weekly), "Socialist Review", et al (To be added) was the holding of at least two "Conference on Socialism and Activism" in 1985 and 1986. Notices of these conferences found in the "Guardian newspaper are reproduced en toto for the years 1985 and 1986, the latter including Bernie Sanders as one of their speakers.

The Guardian of December 26, 1986, p. 17, announced the forthcoming "Conference on Socialism and Activism" to be held on December 5-7, 1986 at Hunter College, New York City. The full text of the notice is as follows:

Keynote speakers include:
- Rep.John Conyers (D-Mich) - the Communist Party's top supporter in Congress at that time
- June Jordan - identified with the Marxist Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO)
- Bertell Ollman - avowed Marxist professor
- Benjamin Spock - Vice presidential candidate on the Marxist Peoples Party ticket in the 1980's. CITATION NEEDED
- Mayor Bernie Sanders - Burlingham, Vermont - avowed "socialist"
- Digna Sanchez - Puerto Rican Marxist, associated with the Puerto Rican Socialist Party (PRSP) and its publication Claridad, formerly the Movement for the Independence of Puerto Rico (MFIPR)[1]
- Michio Kaku - former member and supporter of the maoist Communist Workers Party (CWP)
