Bio

Verbatim from Yusef Salaam's campaign website:[1]

As a member of the Exonerated Five and a lifelong resident of Harlem, I am running for New York City Council (District 9) with a clear mission in mind: to serve as a voice for my community and work towards creating a better future for all New Yorkers. My experiences in the criminal justice system have taught me the importance of speaking up and advocating for those who are marginalized and forgotten by the powers that be.
Over the past two decades, I have dedicated my life to activism and education, using my platform to shed light on the impacts of mass incarceration and police brutality and to inspire change.
Over the past two decades, I have become a family man, father, poet, activist and inspirational speaker. It has been my mission to educate the public about the impact of mass incarceration and police brutality rooted in our justice system, regularly advocating for criminal justice reform, prison reform and the abolition of juvenile solitary confinement and capital punishment. I am working to restore humanity denied to those incarcerated and those downtrodden by the spiked wheels of justice.
As a board member of the Innocence Project, founding member of Justice 4 the Wrongfully Incarcerated, and 25-year member of the Frederick E. Samuel Community Democratic Club, I have a deep understanding of the issues facing our community. I believe that I have the knowledge, experience, and dedication to make a positive impact as a City Council member, and I am committed to always putting the needs of Harlem first.
My campaign is powered by the people and focused on building a coalition that represents the diverse voices of our district. We are already reaching out to constituents of all ages and backgrounds, including long-time residents, young activists, and disenchanted voters. We believe that by uniting our community and speaking to the systemic issues we face each day, we can energize and activate voters who are eager for change.
Working-class voters, voters of color, and those who are disenchanted with the political process are central to our campaign. As a victim of a broken criminal justice system, I understand the challenges faced by those who are marginalized and neglected by the powers that be.
I believe that by speaking up and advocating for those in need, I can inspire and mobilize a new generation of voters who are passionate about creating a better future for all New Yorkers.

Endorsed by Siraj Wahhaj

Siraj Wahhaj endorses Yusef Salaam

Excerpt from an article titled "City Council candidate touts endorsement from alleged terrorist plotter in 1993 WTC bombing" dated June 24, 2023 in the New York Post:[2]

"Yusef Salaam — one of the exonerated “Central Park Five” defendants now running for a City Council seat in Harlem — is touting an endorsement from an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
Imam Siraj Wahhaj, 73, was identified with 170 others by U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White as one of the “unindicted persons who may be alleged as co-conspirators” in the terrorist attack which killed six people.
Wahhaj later served as a character witness for Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman — the infamous “blind sheikh” who was convicted in 1995 of plotting terrorist attacks in the United States.
While serving as vice president of the Islamic Society of North America, Wahhaj was “accused of urging his followers to overturn the U.S. system of government and set up an Islamic dictatorship,” according to the Department of Justice.
In past remarks, Wahhaj has defended the convicted World Trade Center bomb plotters and disparaged the FBI and CIA as the “real terrorists.”...

[...]

In 2018, Wahhaj’s son — also named Siraj Wahhaj — was busted in a squalid New Mexico compound where was training young children for 'jihad' with firearms and hand-to-hand combat techniques, according to court documents.
“The defendants in this case allegedly were preparing for deadly attacks and their targets included law enforcement and military personnel,” said Michael McGarrity, assistant director of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division at the time.
