Background

Boston Democratic Socialists of America Treasurer Stan Sultan died at his Roslindale home on February 4, 2013, after a long illness. He was a founding member of DSA, as well the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee.

Raised in Brooklyn, Sultan first encountered radical politics at Cornell University in the late 1940s as a recruit to American Youth for Democracy through the Henry Wallace He was later invited to leave by AYD because he did not support the Communist coup in Czechoslovakia.

He eventually found his way to DSOC in the early 1970s, while participating in numerous movements for civil rights (he was a longtime NAACP member), unions, and other causes.

Our condolences go out to wife Betty and family. A memorial service is scheduled for April 4, 4:30-6:00 PM at Dana Commons–Clark University, where Stan taught English.[1]

Democratic Socialists of America

On September 24, 2006, Boston Democratic Socialists of America presented its 25th Annual Debs–Thomas–Bernstein Award to their "longtime comrade, Director of Massachusetts Neighbor to Neighbor, Harris Gruman". The event which was hosted by former Neighbor to Neighbor Director John Maher and Co-Chaired by Senator Pat Jehlen and Massachusetts AFL-CIO Vice President Ed Collins, was also a fundraiser for both Boston DSA and the Mass Alliance. Some Alliance-endorsed candidates were among the attendees, including Denise Provost, Jarrett Barrios, Willie Mae Allen, Claire Naughton and Will Brownsberger. John Maher and Ellen Sarkisian hosted the event; Julie Johnson of the Mass Teachers Association MC'd the event, while primary organizers were Susan Davidoff and Mike Pattberg. Abby Rockefeller & Lee Halprin and Patricia Armstrong, Boston Teachers Union, Local 66, were benefactors of the event.[2]

Stan Sultan was a supporter of the event.
