Education and Immigrant Rights Activist with Oakland Community Organizations (OCO) and Kehilla Synagogue*

I am an Oakland activist, father and former teacher in the public schools. I got involved in my son’s school and became one of many strong volunteer leaders of Oakland Community Organizations (OCO), where we successfully pushed the District to reduce budget cuts to schools and to limit how much could be spent on central administration. We also campaigned for Measure N to bring more college and career focus to the high schools, which has raised graduation rates across Oakland in recent years.

In the area of immigrant rights, I helped to organize Know Your Rights forums for immigrants in Oakland, and the Let Our People Go and #FamiliesBelongTogether protests at the Richmond jail to advocate against mass incarceration and deportation. I have also been an active participant in the great work being done by the Kehilla Synagogue Immigration Committee.[2]
