Infiltrating the Dems

A STRAIN OF THE 2020 campaign for president is the increasing identification of the Democratic Party with socialism. Bernie Sanders is a socialist. Two members of “the Squad” of liberal women of color in Congress are socialists.
So we shouldn’t be surprised that socialists are showing up in the Lucas County Democratic Party.
However, things got a little too cozy recently when the Democratic Socialists of America — joined the party to watch the recent Democratic Party candidate debates.
The local DSA organization supplied the 50-inch television and a laptop with streaming capability so the technology-challenged Lucas County Democratic Party could watch the two debates.
There is much disagreement over whether Northwest Ohio Democratic Socialists of America co-sponsored the debate-watching party at the party’s headquarters building on Madison Avenue. Suffice it to say they did have their banner spread out on the table.
Kurt Young, the Democratic chairman, insists that the debate party was not co-sponsored by the socialists. They just joined an open party, and, oh yeah, provided the TV and Internet.
This close association with a hitherto little-known group raised some eyebrows among Democrats and spurred a 20-minute discussion of the issue at the executive committee meeting last week.
It came out during the discussion that the DSA is unofficially helping a candidate who is running against the Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate in District 5, Sam Melden. The DSA’s treasurer, Connor Kelley, is running for the District 5 seat, now held by term-limited Republican Tom Waniewski.
A better question for Ms. Harper might have been why is the Democratic Party affiliating itself with socialism, a philosophy that some would say is inimical to the American political experiment, which has always upheld private property rights. The goal of socialism is to abolish private property as much as possible.
I spoke with Quinn Albright, who is a member and co-founder of the local chapter of the DSA. He’s co-chairman of the committee to enact “Medicare forAll.”
He supports Bernie Sanders, who calls himself a Democratic socialist but is not a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. The group has not endorsed Mr. Sanders, which is a bone of contention for some local members, says Mr. Albright.
“A lot of DSAs would say Bernie is a Social Democrat. Social Democrats believe in regulated capitalism with a strong welfare state. Democratic socialists believe that worker ownership is the goal, or at least one of them.”
Mr. Albright believes that businesses should be owned by the workers. Quinn, who is 17 and attending Penta Career Center for high school, was a little unsure about when a business should be handed over to the workers.
Simon Nyi, the co-chairman of the DSA of northwest Ohio, was not more specific in a phone conversation we had. He was not sure what mechanism would be used to remove the ownership of GM from its stockholders and hand it over to the workers. He said the DSA’s core mission is to build a society in which ordinary working people democratically control the economy and the government.
