Naila Awan works for Demos. She is a civil and human rights lawyer who joined Demos in February 2015. She works to help address practices and policies that restrict the ability of individuals to engage in the democratic process and repress voices of traditionally marginalized communities.

Prior to joining Demos, Naila worked on civil rights litigation and policy reform efforts. Naila worked on a case challenging Ohio’s elimination of same-day registration and cuts to early voting and was responsible for developing the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio’s legal challenge to the state’s new ballot access law. She also formerly served on the legislative staff for Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, worked on efforts to reform U.S. war on terror policy, and participated in a fact-finding mission in post-earthquake Haiti that examined problems with sexual exploitation and gender-based violence in the State.

Naila holds a L.L.M. in International Legal Studies from New York University School of Law, a J.D. from The Ohio State University, Moritz College of Law, and a B.A. in Journalism and Public Relations from Miami University of Ohio.[1]
