Lucy Montgomery
Template:TOCnestleft Lucy Hassell Montgomery a longtime civil rights activist and philanthropist known as a "crusader for the environment" who funded many civil rights initiatives in the South during the 1960s, died June at the age of 90 in her Chicago lakefront apartment[1].
- She was known for her colorful hats, her warm smile and generous heart, a woman who had a deep sensitivity to the Black civil rights struggle.
Hyde Park-Kenwood Voices
In January 1969, the Chicago radical newspaper, Hyde Park-Kenwood Voices, listed those who had helped produce its first 16 monthly issues as "writers, researchers, photographers, artists and clerical workers".
The list included Lucy Montgomery.[2]
Civil rights supporter
In the 1960s, she went to Oxford, Ohio to train volunteers for the Mississippi Student Project.
Her financial contributions ensured the movement had resources. Montgomery also helped to finance the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee and the Southern Christian Leadership Council[3].
Tribute to Golub and Montgomery
ON November 16, 1989, Allen Schwartz and Lucy Montgomery produced an item entitled "Lucy Montgomery" for the Chicago Committee to Defend the Bill of Rights Tribute to Leon Golub and Lucy Montgomery, held at the Congress Hotel, Chicago.[4]
Chicago Area Friends of SNCC
In 2005 Chicago Area Friends of SNCC organized the "Tell the Story: The Chicago SNCC History Project, 1960-1965" Chicago Area Friends of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Chicago Civil Rights Movement, c. 1960-1965. The event was held October 21-22, 2005 Roosevelt University, Chicago, Illinois.
The committee listed several people in "memoriam" including Lucy Montgomery.[5]
