“We support Israel because we cherish its declaration of independence and all of the goals that it aspires [to]. But I cannot support [Israeli Prime Minister-designate Benjamin] Netanyahu’s efforts to undermine the very aspirations of the democratic state of Israel by marginalizing, annexing and compromising the rights of Arab Israeli citizens,” Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT), who was elected in November to the U.S. Senate, said at a Monday afternoon plenary session.

Other congressional speakers at the conference included Reps. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM), Sean Casten (D-IL), Madeleine Dean (D-PA), Gerry Connolly (D-VA) and Jennifer Wexton (D-VA). Reps.-elect Greg Casar (D-TX), Sydney Kamlager (D-CA) and Becca Balint (D-VT) sent remarks over video. Several senior Democrats, including House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC), House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-CA) and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler (D-NY), stopped by the gala.[2]

State Senate

January 2014 a former Loudoun County prosecutor will succeed Attorney General Mark Herring in the Virginia Senate after she won a special election that will likely allow Democrats to regain control of the chamber.

Jennifer Wexton defeated Republican John Whitbeck by a 53-38 percent margin. Former state Del. Joe T. May, who ran as an independent, came in third with slightly less than 10 percent of the vote.

“It feels terrific,” Wexton told the Loudoun Times-Mirror after she defeated Whitbeck and May.

Herring in a statement congratulated Wexton on her “hard-fought and well-earned victory.”

“I could not be more proud to know that the citizens of Virginia’s 33rd Senate District will continue to be represented by someone who will always put problem solving over partisan politics and who will work tirelessly to strengthen our economy, improve our transportation system and who will support our public schools,” he said.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Lieutenant Gov. Ralph Northam, the Human Rights Campaign and EMILY’s List are among those who also endorsed Wexton.[3]

JStreet candidate forum

Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending a candidate forum focused on foreign policy featuring four Democratic candidates vying to replace Rep. Barbara Comstock in VA-10. The candidates, Lindsey Davis Stover, Dan Helmer, Alison Friedman and State Senator Jennifer Wexton, are all supported by JStreetPAC. Going in, I knew each candidate to be talented, eloquent and passionate — so I expected the forum would be energizing.

Co-sponsored by Foreign Policy for America, JStreet, AAPI Victory Fund, NIAC Action, Latino Victory Fund, EMGAGE and the Council for a Livable World, it brought almost two hundred people together for a substantive conversation about America’s role in the world.

Even more exciting for me was that it featured a robust discussion about Israel, the conflict and the Iran nuclear deal. Each candidate expressed thoughtful and sound positions on issues ranging from a two-state solution to anti-BDS legislation and Iran sanctions.

The first topic covered was Iran, where Dan Helmer discussed how his tours of military duty in Iran and Afghanistan inform his commitment to diplomacy-first foreign policy:

Later in the event, I asked a question about the two-state solution and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Alison Friedman reiterated her strong support for a two-state solution and lambasted President Trump for actions he has taken that will only thwart peace. State Senator Jennifer Wexton offered her perspective on anti-BDS legislation, stating that despite her own opposition to BDS, she strongly believes that people should have a right to hold dissenting political views.

Finally, we returned again to the Iran deal, where the other candidates were given a chance to voice their views. I was struck by Lindsey Davis Stover’s critique of Trump’s attempts to undermine the nuclear deal. [6]

From a NIAC Action press release October 16 2018:

NIAC Action is excited to endorse Jennifer Wexton as the next U.S. Representative of Virginia’s 10th District. Wexton has proven that she is a fierce opponent of Donald Trump’s unconscionable Muslim ban and was among the first elected officials to protest the ban at Dulles Airport in Virginia. Wexton is also a strong supporter of the nuclear accord with Iran, which she described as a “a triumph for peaceful diplomacy as a means to settle international conflict and avoid war.” As a Member of Congress, she would be a strong fighter for the priorities of her district, including its large Iranian-American community.

In contrast, the incumbent Barbara Comstock has done nothing to rein in Trump’s ban on so many families in Virginia-10 and commended President Trump for withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and snapping back sanctions that punish ordinary Iranians. Comstock even hosted a fundraiser with John Bolton, now Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor, who has repeatedly called for bombing Iran and who has accepted tens of thousands of dollars as a from the Mujahedin-e-Khalq cult while it was still designated a terrorist organization.

With Trump’s ban continuing to separate Iranian families and the drumbeat of war getting louder, the Iranian-American community needs a champion like Wexton on Capitol Hill. Wexton describes the ban as “not only unconstitutional, but racist, ineffective, and a hazard for our national security.” In Congress, Wexton “will vote against any form of the Muslim ban and any other similar discriminatory policies,” and use her platform to speak out against it just like she has done as a State Senator.

On foreign policy, Wexton will work to support the Iran nuclear deal and oppose legislation that seeks to undermine it, including new sanctions that risk impacting the deal. Wexton notes that “sanctions tend to harm civil society and common people as much if not more than they influence the regime to change its policies,” and that “the negative effects of sanctions must be weighed very heavily and considered very closely.”

Wexton has been a committed public servant throughout her career, including as a prosecutor, substitute judge, an attorney for at-risk children, and a State Senator. She was inspired to run for State Senate based on what she saw as a radical Republican agenda on social issues, and is now running for Congress because she is “concerned about the damage that can be done to our country and our Democracy by President Trump and the extreme Republican party that enables him.”[7]

Setting the Stage for 2019

Meeting Jennifer Wexton, a candidate endorsed by NIAC Action who won her Congressional Race in VA-10.

Donna Farvard Jan 25.It’s 2019. At NIAC Action, we’re planning for what could be a monumental year of grassroots actions in order to accomplish our main priorities this year.

This year, we have big plans to repeal the Muslim Ban, limit Trump’s war powers, and return to the JCPOA. Big moves like these require some smaller steps along the way.

To put an end to the unjust Muslim Ban, we’re working on passing a bill through the House and pushing for oversight hearings that investigate the sham of the waiver process. To put a stop on Trump’s path to war, we’re working on legislation that will require Congressional approval before Trump can act out against Iran. And to reinstate the nuclear agreement, putting an end to the sanctions that punish ordinary Iranians every day, we’re encouraging Congress to hold the President accountable to his international agreements.

The new Congress has a host of issues to deal with in the year ahead, and we need to act fast to make sure our priorities make it to their list. That’s why we need to make our voices heard now, by meeting with our members of Congress, collecting petition signatures and generating calls to congressional offices, and doing so much more — and we need your help.[8]

Ghaisar case

The following statement was issued jointly by the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), Iranian Alliances Across Borders (IAAB), and the Iranian American Bar Association (IABA) on developments to the case involving Bijan Ghaisar.

On November 17, 2017, 25 year old Bijan Ghaisar was shot and killed by two U.S. Park Police officers in Virginia. Bijan, who was unarmed, was pursued by the officers following a minor traffic incident and shot nine times in an encounter that should have easily been resolved without deadly force. He died in the hospital ten days later.

As organizations serving and representing tens of thousands of Iranian Americans, we have been deeply concerned by the lack of accountability from the U.S. Park Police, Department of Justice and FBI surrounding the investigation into the shooting of Bijan. Delayed justice is no justice at all, and tangible steps must be taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future at the hands of these two officers who engaged in deadly excessive force. Doing so is an imperative first step to ensure public safety and pursue justice for the Ghaisar family.

While this is a critical step, it would be insufficient without further efforts by the FBI and DOJ to release a full and public report on the shooting, and help facilitate a favorable resolution of the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the Ghaisar family. We also join a number of officials—including Reps. Don Beyer (D-VA), Jennifer Wexton (D-VA), Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA)—in condemning the FBI for failing to answer questions into the 16-month long investigation put forth by former Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley.

Refusing to provide transparency into the investigation, and failing to hold the responsible parties to account, greatly risks an erosion in the public’s trust of the justice system, and continues to deny justice to the Ghaisar family. The only acceptable outcome for the investigation into this case is full transparency into the findings, and the immediate firing of the responsible officers.[9]

APALA support

APALA’s civic engagement program in the 2018 midterm election cycle focused specifically on door knocking, phone banking, registering voters, and protecting voters at the polls in California, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington. In Virginia, voters replaced Republican Representative Comstock with Democratic candidate Jennifer Wexton as a clear push back on the Trump agenda. Across the board, early vote and election day turnout was high.[10]

And Asian-Americans can make an electoral difference, says Alvina Yeh, executive director of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA). Indeed, two years ago in Nevada, the winner of a tight U.S. Senate race there, Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, said “APALA and Asian-American media were critical” for her win.

Pennsylvania APALA reps work in coordination with three community groups, both on campaigns and on longer-term issues affecting Asian-Americans. In Minnesota, APALA hooked up with the Asian-American Organizing Project serving the Hmong. In northern Virginia, they’re hitting the hustings to oust pro-Trump anti-immigrant GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock in a district with a rapidly growing Asian-American population.[11]
