April 2005 Event

On April 30, 2005, the Detroit Labor Committee for Peace and Justice held a meeting entitled "A Forum On Labor Against The War" at UAW Local 22 for the purpose of discussing how and why the labor movement should become more involved in the anti-war movement, even as we continue to oppose George Bush’s policies on the domestic front.[1]

Speaking at the event were:

Open Letter Against The War

Circa April 2005, 199 members of unions and labor-supportive organizations signed a statement calling upon the entire labor movement to take a stand against the war in Iraq. The petition reads in part,[1]

"The men and women risking their lives in Iraq and the more than 7,000 killed and wounded Americans come from poor and working families. All service people are entitled to better health care than they are getting, better veterans' benefits, and assistance in finding reemployment upon their return. We can support our troops best by demanding they be brought back home very quickly. We take this stand because:"
  • We were lied to about the reasons for this war.
  • The Iraqi people do not want us there. The war has devastated the country and resulted in tens of thousands of Iraqi civilian casualties.
  • The war is enriching oil companies and private corporations, while Iraqi labor is being suppressed.
  • The money spent on the occupation in Iraq could be used for education, health care, for working and poor people in America, aiding disaster victims across the world and for rebuilding Iraq.
  • Opposing George Bush's foreign policy is an essential part of building a broad movement to oppose the most anti-labor President in recent memory."

The following put their names to the statement:
