Conrado Terrazas

Conrado Terrazas is Principal Assistant, Communications Director to California Assemblymember Gilbert Cedillo, since January 2010.

Terrazas has been an organizer for the United Farm Workers, received an MBA from Yale, worked as an executive at Fox and Disney studios, and founded the Harvey Milk Democratic Club, one of L.A.’s leading gay and lesbian political institutions. After he ran unsuccessfully against Jackie Goldberg for a council seat back in 1993, she hired him as a field deputy, in which capacity he worked as a liaison with the Hollywood business community, cleaning up the neighborhood and shepherding a youth center into existence.[1]

He is the son of prominent California Communist Party USA member Mauricio Terrazas.

In 1979 Conrado Terrazas was staff organiser for the Campaign for Economic Democracy.[3]

Labor work

Terrazas managed 7 political organizers as Statewide Political Field Director for SEIU Local 1000. Lobbied legislators, elected candidates, developed lobbying and campaign plans, political budgets and member leaders. As So. California Healthcare Reform Organizer for California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, lobbied for healthcare reform legislation. At Communications Workers of America, organized psych-techs at State Hospitals & was a field director against the School Voucher Initiative for California Teachers Association and a United Farm Workers organizer.[4]

Political work

Terrazas was Field Director for Richard Polanco for Assembly, Senator David Roberti’s Beat the Recall & Mike Woo for Mayor. Coordinated Equality California's campaign on behalf of Curren Price's successful campaign for State Senate.

Was an Aide to LA City Councilmember Jackie Goldberg. In Hollywood, organized residents to reduce crime & spearheaded development of $6 million Youth Center and coordinated outreach for site of the new Echo Park library.

Organized galas for non-profits: JWCH Institute, Oldtimers Foundation & El Centro Del Pueblo & raised funds for CongressmanXavier Becerra, Jose Solache, Lynwood Unified School Board; Felipe Agredano, Garvey School District; Sharon Martinez, Councilmember, Monterey Park; George Cole, Central Basin Water District & Juan Noguez, Mayor, Huntington Park.

From June 1974 – April 1977 he was community organizer in East Los Angeles where "I organized residents and students to remove grapes and Gallo Wine from over 100 liquor stores and markets; organized two rallies at California State University at Los Angeles featuring Cesar Chavez with over 1,000 students in attendance at each; organized lettuce, grape and asparagus farm workers in the Imperial and Coachella Valleys for union representation elections and helped organize a rally with 4,000 farm workers featuring Cesar Chavez."

From 1974 – 1977 Terrazas was active with the United Farm Workers Grape Boycott Committee.

From October 1977 – May 1979 he a Community Organizer and Campaign Manager Campaign for Economic Democracyin Eastern Los Angeles County. Coordinated community campaign to pass first rent freeze in California in the City of El Monte and managed rent control ballot measure campaign.

From June 1979 – October 1980 Terrazas rained staff from non-profit agencies in organizing skills as part of ACTION contract in California, Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii.

August 1993 – November 1993 Terrazas coordinated field campaign in Eastern Los Angeles including recruiting hundreds of high school students to volunteer at phone banks, as Eastside Field Director, Woo For Mayor

From June 1994 – November 2000 he was staff member of Councilmember Jackie Goldberg, 13th District, coordinated organizing campaigns in Hollywood, Echo Park and Elysian Valley including securing city services for constituents. Supervised the development of the $6 million Yucca Youth Center in Hollywood and spearheaded outreach to seek input for the location of a new library in Echo Park or Silver Lake.

He was Campaign Manager and Fundraiser Pedro Carrillo for Assembly, 46th District, October 2001 – March 2002

Terrazas was Political Field Director for SEIU Local 1000, September 2007 – December 2008.He served as statewide Political Field Director for SEIU Local 1000 "where I supervised seven political organizers. I managed their work lobbying, establishing and maintaining relationships with legislators, electing candidates and developing member leaders. I also developed statewide lobbying, campaign plans and political budgets".[5]

At Saturday evenings A Night At Epiphany honoring Dolores Huerta, Conrado Terrazas veterano del movimiento and head field deputy for Gil Cedillo, Dolores, my brother Ricardo F. Munoz and. Behind us some of the photo exhibit curated by Jimmy O'Balles and me as historian. If you look closely you can see Ed Roybal between Conrado and Dolores with the 1935 Spanish Club at Roosevelt with Roybal as president, then between Dolores and Ricardo is a late 30's event of the Mexican Youth Conference with Bert Corona and my uncle Felix Gutierrez and behind me a photo of a state Community Service Organization leadership, on my right you can see Saul Alinsky, also in photo Roybal, Fred Ross, Cesar and Helen Chavez, Herman Gallegos and others.

Chicano movement

The 40th Anniversary Commemoration Committee of the Chicano Moratoriums was formed in the summer 2009 by the Chair of the National Chicano Moratorium Committee of August 29, 1970 along with two independent Chicano Movement historians whom although not of the baby boomer generation, have become inspired by the Movimiento. The organization posted a list of significant “Chicano movement” activists on its website which included Conrado Terrazas.[7]
