Background
“As the daughter of a black man who grew up in Virginia during Jim Crow, and a white woman raised in a small Kansas town, navigating race always affected every part of my life. But witnessing the Rodney King beating and being targeted as a “radical feminist” in college marked the beginning of my knowledge that my life’s work would focus on social justice. I do this work to support systems change. But I also do it to support each of us in healing from the effects of these oppressions, so that we can be the leaders we were meant to be and find new solutions to these generations-old challenges.”
Alysia Tate is an independent consultant and strategist who helps leaders and organizations increase their effectiveness, skills and knowledge, particularly around race and other equity issues. She is a leading statewide advocate for equity and human rights. With over two decades of management experience, her areas of expertise include leadership and board development, coaching, facilitation/training, organizational capacity building and communications strategy.
Ms. Tate is the former Director of Programs for Chicago Foundation for Women, where she led the foundation’s grantmaking and capacity-building efforts to ensure women and girls’ economic security, freedom from violence and access to health care. She was a speechwriter and advisor to former Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan on issues including civil rights, racial bias and criminal justice reform. She also worked as the Chief Operating Officer of the Community Renewal Society, a faith-based organization working to eradicate racism and poverty, and was editor and publisher of The Chicago Reporter, an investigative journal focused on race and poverty published by CRS.
Consulting clients include Chicago Jobs Council, United Congress of Community and Religious Organizations, Resilience (formerly Rape Victim Advocates) the Chicago Community Trust, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Alysia’s honors include serving as a Leadership Greater Chicago fellow and a Crain’s Chicago Business “40 Under 40.” She is a member of The Chicago Network, an association of top women executives, the Association of Black Foundation Executives and Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy. When she is not working, she is usually happiest singing in the alto section of the Chicago Community Chorus.
