Abshir Omar Mahamed is a Des Moines Iowa activist. Brother of Naimar Omar.

Background

Born in Somalia, Abshir Omar fled that country’s civil war in the 1990s, living in a refugee camp in Kenya before immigrating to the United States and growing up in Seattle.

He attended Iowa State University and has lived in Des Moines since 2012. Already the board president for CAIR - Iowa, Mahamed said he’s been “inundated” with invitations to join additional nonprofit boards since Election Day.

In 2018 he’ll serve on the board of Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, on an advisory panel for the Refugee Alliance of Central Iowa and as an immigrant liaison for Hunger Free Polk County.[1]

We aim to get a stronger grasp of the unique challenges that the pandemic has brought to labor organizing as well as the opportunities it has presented in growing an internationalist workers movement.
