Val Hoyle

Val Hoyle is a member of the U.S. House, representing Oregon's 4th Congressional District. She assumed office on January 3, 2023.

Hoyle was the Oregon Commissioner of Labor and Industries from 2019 to 2022. She is also a former Democratic member of the Oregon House of Representatives, representing District 14 from 2009 to 2017. She was first appointed to the chamber on September 23, 2009, to replace Chris Edwards, who was appointed to the Oregon State Senate.

On July 7, 2015, Hoyle announced that she was stepping down as majority leader in order to run for secretary of state in 2016. On May 17, 2016, she was defeated in the Democratic primary by Brad Avakian.

Early life

Val Hoyle was born in California and lives in Springfield, Oregon. Hoyle graduated from Merrimack High School. She earned a B.A. in political science from Emmanuel College in 1992. Her career experience includes working as a director at United Way of Lane County, a policy fellow at Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics, and a commissioner at the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries.

Resolution condemning socialism

February 2, 2023 House Republicans moved a Resolution condemning socialism and certain dictators.

The Resolution began:

Whereas socialist ideology necessitates a concentration of power that has time and time again collapsed into Communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships;
Whereas socialism has repeatedly led to famine and mass murders, and the killing of over 100,000,000 people worldwide;
Whereas many of the greatest crimes in history were committed by socialist ideologues, including Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un, Daniel Ortega, Hugo Chavez, and Nicolás Maduro;[1]

Eighty six Democrats voted no. Forteen voted "present" and six didn't vote.[2]

Representative Val Hoyle voted "Present".[3]

JStreet PAC endorsement

In 2024 JStreet PAC gave Val Hoyle a "Priority endorsement".[4]

Congresswoman Val Hoyle was born and raised in California. Her parents were dedicated activists for organized labor and the 1972 Equal Rights Amendment. Hoyle went on to be the first in her family to graduate from college. She has made Lane County, Oregon her home for the last 20 years.
Hoyle is a consistent champion of J Street's values in Congress. During this Congress she cosponsored the Schakowsky resolution on Israeli democracy, the resolution calling for the release of hostages from Hamas, and the McCaul-Meeks resolution standing with Israel in its defense against Hamas.[5]

Val Hoyle (OR-04) was in 2023, a new member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
