Maya Sheppard joined NLSP in September of 2015 as the Breaking Barriers to Employment Project Staff Attorney. She is based in the Rhode Island office.
From 2012-2015, she worked as an Assistant Public Defender in Knoxville, Tennessee representing both juvenile and adult clients facing delinquency and criminal cases. Prior to that position she worked as an investigator and mitigation specialist, assisting in the defense of clients facing the death penalty. Throughout law school, Maya volunteered with several community-based legal clinics dealing with both civil and criminal issues. She is committed to providing legal resources and support to economically marginalized communities, and communities disproportionately impacted by the criminal justice system.[2]
