Mark Bray
Template:TOCnestleft Mark Bray was heavily involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement, and wrote a book about his experience.[1] He was described as a member of the anarcho-syndicalist group, the Industrial Workers of the World in 2011 and wrote an influential book justifying the tactics of Antifa: “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook.”
Mark Bray is a History lecturer at Dartmouth.[1]
Biography
"Mark Bray is a historian of human rights, terrorism, and political radicalism in Modern Europe. He completed his PhD in Modern European and Women's and Gender History at Rutgers University in 2016, and is currently finishing his manuscript "The Anarchist Inquisition: Terrorism and the Ethics of Modernity in Spain, 1893-1909." "The Anarchist Inquisition" explores the emergence of groundbreaking human rights campaigns across Europe and the Americans in response to the Spanish state's brutal repression of dissent in the wake of anarchist bombings and assassinations. At GRID, he will begin work on his next project which explores the cultures of violence and street resistance that emerge in the social movements of postwar Western Europe and their impact on conceptions of leftist masculinity in the context of the emergence of competing conceptions of feminism. Bray is the author of Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook (Melville House, 2017) and Translating Anarchy: The Anarchism of Occupy Wall Street (Zero Books, 2013) as well as the co-editor of the forthcoming Francisco Ferrer and the Modern School (PM Press, 2018)."[1]
The Goal of Antifa
Mark Bray explains in his book "Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook" that the "goal" is to completely alienate anyone who voted for President Donald Trump:[1]
- "Our goal should be that in twenty years those who voted for Trump are too uncomfortable to share that fact in public. We may not always be able to change someone’s beliefs, but we sure as hell can make it politically, socially, economically, and sometimes physically costly to articulate them."

Thomas Good, writing for Next Left Notes wrote of meeting Bray on a Nov. 17 "day of action" coordinated by the Occupy Wall Street protestors:[1]
- "As we left Zuccotti park my old friend Mark Bray said hello. Mark is an Occupy Wall Street press liasion and a Wobbly. I asked if he was still in the Union and Mark said that he was a little behind on his dues, but still a Wob — as he opened his jacket to show me his Industrial Workers of the World t-shirt."
