Template:TOCnestleft Joseph Albert Main has been involved with the Structures Group, Materials and Construction Research Division, Building and Fire Research Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He attended Johns Hopkins University to obtain his Bachelor's of Science in Civil (Structural) Engineering, graduating in 1998. He earned his M.S.E. in 2001 and his Ph.D. in 2002, both from Johns Hopkins University.

Obama appointment

In July 2009, Main was nominated by the Obama administration for the position of Assistant Secretary for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in the Department of Labor. Main is from Virginia.[1]

In October 2009, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee (HELP) Main was approved for the position. Senator Tom Harkin, Chairman of the HELP Committee announced that the Committee approved Main to be Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health.

“We are particularly eager to see someone confirmed at MSHA and Mr. Joseph Main, is well-qualified to serve the Mine Safety and Health Administration," Harkin says.[2]
