Janey Archey
Janey Archey is an activist, organizer, and educator in St. Louis focused on many intersectional topics, including poverty, anti-racist political education, police brutality, the death penalty, and lesbian-feminist rights.
Born on October 13, 1954, Archey earned an associate degree in child development from Southwest Missouri State University in 1975, a bachelor of arts degree in early childhood education and women’s studies from Webster University in 1984, and a master of social work with concentration in social and economic development from Washington University in St. Louis in 1987. She became a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in the State of Missouri in 1991, and successfully supervised three social work students who received their LCSW liscenses.
Highlights of Archey’s professional career include mitigation specialist working on death penalty cases for the Missouri State Public Defender’s Office, homeless services coordinator for the Human Development Corporation, field organizer for the Missouri Women's Vote Project, and the children’s program coordinator for the St. Louis Abused Women’s Support Project. Archey also taught classes at Forest Park Community College, St. Louis University, and University of Missouri - St. Louis on a variety of topics including: social policy; social welfare history; community organizing; diversity and social justice; externship in criminal justice; and the first-ever Lesbian and Gay issues in social work.
Archey was also significantly involved in several community organizations, including writing on racism in the queer community for the women of color led zine, "RESIST!" Founded the anti-racism committee on racism and homelessness, and wrote in it's monthly newsletter through the Homeless Network Board. Organized the anti-racism commitee of the Coalition Against Police Crimes and Repression to help create St. Louis City's first civilian oversight board. Appointed to the first St. Louis LGBTQ Mayor's Taskforce and served as it's co-chair. Helped create intersectional workshops including LGBTQ issues for the Justice Institute. Wrote about police brutality in several local newspapers up through the Ferguson Uprisings, participated in direct actions and was arrested twice for civil disobedience during CAPCR protests.[1]
