Political career

Howard Metzenbaum was elected to the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1942 and to the Ohio Senate in 1947, where he served until 1951.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1973.

NLG

Metzenbaum served as the Secretary of the National Lawyers Guild. This organization was launched in 1936 as a spin-off of the International Labor Defense, a Communist front started in 1925 as the U.S. branch of the International Red Aid, a worldwide Soviet-backed group founded in 1922.[1]

In 1940. the NLG President. Russell N. Chase, was also the attorney for the Communist Party USA in Metzenbaum's home state of Ohio.

Communist school

Metzenbaum was one of three "incorporators" of the Ohio School of Social Science in 1944 and later served as its Treasurer. This school was founded in Cleveland by the Communist Party USA to train operatives, recruit new party members and "indoctrinate Communists and outsiders in the theory and practice of Communism." according to the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee.

It was labeled "a Communist adjunct" by Tom Clark, Attorney General during the Truman Administration.[2]

Communist front sponsor

In 1984 Howard Metzenbaum was one of the "co-sponsors" of the Ninth Annual Banquet of the Labor Research Association . This organization was identified as a Communist Party USA front. It cooperated with the Soviet international front group, the World Federation of Trade Unions.

The banquet honored Democratic Congressman Charles Hayes. Other cosponsors included Bella Abzug and actor Ed Asner.[3]

Sensitive posts

In the 1980s Metzenbaum served on such sensitive committees as Intelligence, Judiciary (which has responsibility for FBI budgets and legislation), Energy and Natural Resources, and Labor and Human Resources. He consistently voted against a strong American defense. The American Security Council gave him a rating of 0% for 1988 (in contrast to 70% for his Democratic colleague from Ohio, John Glenn.[4]

Coalition for Democratic Values

In 1990, Democratic Socialists of America "friend" Heather Booth became director of the Coalition for Democratic Values, a new national Democratic Party organization founded, under the leadership of Senators Howard Metzenbaum, and Paul Simon, to hold the Democratic Party to "progressive standards."[5][6]

Single-payer Bill

In 1994 Jim McDermott, John Conyers and Paul Wellstone promoted a "single-payer" health care bill (HR1200/S491).[7] Ellen Shaffer, a member of Wellstone's staff told the People's Weekly World that the authors had been "working closely" with Hillary Clinton. "She knows what they are doing" Shaffer said.[8]

Senators Howard Metzenbaum, Paul Simon and Daniel Inouye joined in sponsoring another "single payer" Bill, S491, in the Senate.[9]

Campaign for America's Future

In 1996 Howard Metzenbaum, U.S. Senator was one of the original 130 founders of Campaign for America's Future.[10]

Supported by Council for a Livable World

The Council for a Livable World, founded in 1962 by long-time socialist activist and alleged Soviet agent, Leo Szilard, is a non-profit advocacy organization that seeks to "reduce the danger of nuclear weapons and increase national security", primarily through supporting progressive, congressional candidates who support their policies. The Council supported Howard Metzenbaum in his successful Senate run as candidate for Ohio.[11]
