Hillary Rodham Clinton: What Every American Should Know was written by Christian Josi, executive director of The American Conservative Union. The 89-page book was published by the American Conservative Union as a special abridged version for the New York Senate race in 2000.

The book was written to draw "together the facts that should make anyone question the first lady's political motives and goals."[1]

Notable quotes

  • "The Whitewater records point to Hillary and it is her fingerprints one finds on virtually every questionable activity launched since her husband took office."[2]
  • "Hillary -- who had spent most of her life denouncing the greedy predators of Wall Street -- enjoyed the exhilaration of making money the easy way."[3]
  • "With few exceptions, Hillary Clinton's early abuses of power have been stored away in the attic, like the fading photographs of great-grandparents; and they will probably remain there."[4]
  • "Hillary was the chief architect of this take-no-prisoners approach to the health-care battle. She went around the country impugning the motives and integrity of those who disagreed with her."[5]

Chapter summaries

One: Who is Hillary Rodham Clinton

Topics discussed
Notable events
  • Hillary worked in Washington DC on the investigation into Richard Nixon and Watergate[8]
  • Hillary moved to Arkansas to take a job as a law professor
  • Hillary and Bill were married[9]

Two: What's in a name

Topics discussed
  • After Bill and Hillary were married, she kept her last name. Bill was elected Attorney General of Arkansas. Campaign staffers maintained that Bill continued affairs, sometimes with two or three one-night stands each week.[10]
  • Bill became governor of Arkansas in 1978. In 1980, Bill ran for re-election and was shockingly defeated, in part attributed to the public's perception of his marriage with Hillary.[11]
  • The 1982 election showed a new Hillary. She washed and coifed her hair in public. She wore makeup. She traded Ben Franklin glasses for contact lenses. She dressed "like a smart southern woman rather than a Yankee lesbian."[12]
  • She began introducing herself as Mrs. Bill Clinton.[13]

Three: Cattlegate

Topics discussed
  • In 1978, Hillary turned a small $1,000 investment into nearly $100,000 after 10 months. The issue was looked upon as a possible attempt by Tyson foods to curry favor with the Clinton administration.[14]

Four: Whitewater

Topics discussed
  • The Whitewater controversy pertains to a real estate investment controversy involving the Clinton's and their associates, Jim and Susan McDougal. The investments were in the Whitewater Development Corporation, which was a failed business entity in the 1970s and 1980s.[15] The McDougal's told Bill and Hillary of a "real sweet real estate deal", involving purchasing 250 acres of land near the White River.[16]

Five: Travelgate

Topics discussed
  • On May 19, 1993, seven White House Travel Office staffers were fired, for little apparent reason besides to make way for a company owned by Clinton's friends (Harry Thomason and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason) from Arkansas. Prior to the removal of the previous staff -- who historically would carryover from administration-to-administration -- Harry Thomason accused Travel Office employees of demanding kickbacks. An accusation later proved false.[17]
  • Later, one fired staffer -- Billy Dale -- would be charged with embezzlement after the Clinton administration demanded FBI files on travel office staffers. Dale was acquitted by a jury.
  • The chapter intends to portray Clinton's desire to use her political position to benefit her friends.[18]

Six: Filegate

Topics discussed
  • Spawning from Travelgate was the Filegate controversy. During Travelgate, the Clinton administration requested FBI records on more than 900 Republican appointees from prior administrations. The request of FBI files from a presidential administration is standard operating procedure for when a new President is looking to fill political appointee positions. But those requests are typically sent in batches of 2 or 3 and pertinent to a current position. What made the Clinton request strange, was the sheer size of the request -- more than 900 files -- as well as the fact that they were for prior appointees of Republican administrations.[19]
  • A lawsuit was later filed that named Hillary as a defendant, alleging that she was an instigator in the White House's request for 900+ FBI files.[20]
  • Linda Tripp testified that the files were being uploaded on White House computers for transfer to the Democratic National Committee.[21]
  • An office assistant testified to a congressional committee that the White House deliberately went after the FBI background of files of the Travel Office employees. Additionally, files were acquired on hundreds of former Republican White House aides for "no official reason."[22]
  • One charge levied at the Clinton White House was "partisan misuse of the FBI" -- which is the same severe charge alleged against President Nixon surrounding Watergate.[23]

Seven: Vince Foster

Topics discussed
  • Chapter delves into the Clinton family's relationship with Vince Foster.
  • Foster was Hillary's "closest friend" at the Rose Law Firm.[24]
  • The chapter discusses excerpts from the book Bill and Hillary: The Marriage, in which police officers are interviewed about Hillary and Foster's relationship.[25]
  • Foster took a 50 percent pay cut to leave a job with the Rose Law Firm and travel with the Clintons to Washington D.C. when Bill was elected president. Foster was hired as Deputy White House Counsel.[26]

Eight: Hillarycare

Topics discussed
  • Hillary was appointed to the task force to reform America's healthcare system.
  • Josi writes that America's healthcare system was not in a crisis, but that the Clinton administration waged a propaganda campaign that shifted the American mindset.[27]
  • During the healthcare battle, the Democratic National Committee produced ads against Democratic incumbents who were not falling in line, including Senator Bob Kerrey of Nebraska.[28]

Nine: Bimbo Eruptions

Ten: In a Leauge by Herself
