Don Calloway
Template:TOCnestleft Don Calloway is a State Representative from Missouri representing District 71. Calloway is an active member of Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in St. Louis City. He lives in Bel-Nor where he we grew up, with his wife Sarah Jane Forman, Esq., and son, Donald III. [1]
Education
Calloway earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and English Literature from Alabama A&M University in 2002, where he was president of Student Government and active in his fraternity. He earned his Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law in 2005. [2]
Private Career
In addition to his legislative duties, Calloway is an attorney in private practice in Missouri and Illinois. Calloway’s practice consists primarily of civil litigation cases in business and commercial disputes. Calloway also specializes in constitutional rights and civil liberties cases. He maintains an active pro bono practice, through which he provides free legal assistance to needy citizens. [3]
State Legislature
Calloway was elected to the Missouri House in 2008 and sits on the Rules Committee, Special Standing Committee on General Laws, and the Special Standing Committee on Emerging Issues in Agriculture.[4]
Supported Progressive Health Care Reform
In late 2009, Don Calloway was one of more than 1,000 state legislators to sign a letter entitled "State Legislators for Progressive Health Care Reform". The letter was a project of the Progressive States Network and was developed in consultation with national health care reform advocates, including the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, Community Catalyst, Families USA, Herndon Alliance, National Women's Law Center, Northeast Action, SEIU, and Universal Health Care Action Network. The letter reads in part,[5]
- "Failure to pass national comprehensive health reform now will further jeopardize state and local budgets, undermining public services like education, public safety, and transportation infrastructure... We, the undersigned, call on President Obama and the Congress to enact bold and comprehensive health care reform this year – based on these principles and a strong federal-state collaboration – and pledge our support as state legislators and allies in pursuit of guaranteed, high quality, affordable health care for all."
