Seattle: People's Daily World, 1989
An article in the CPUSA newspaper the People's Daily World of May 25, 1989, p. 5, entitled "Awards banquet hears PDW editor, cites activists", describe the event as follows:
"Friends and supporters of the People's Daily World gathered here last weekend for the highlight of their 1989 fund drive, the third annual "Northwest Newsmaker Awards" banquet. PDW editor Barry Cohen spoke on "Remaking the world: how people make history"."
People/organizations who either spoke or received awards included:
- Barry Cohen - PDW editor, and open CPUSA leader
- Washington Federation of State Employees, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1488 AFSCME
- Althea Burton - master of ceremonies for the banquet, accepted the award on behalf of the union
- Fr. Bill Bichsel - challenged candidate George Bush on his Iran-contragate role during a campaign speech in Seattle
- Pat Stell - accepting on behalf of the Puget Sound Chapter, Coalition of Labor Union Women - described her recent trip to the Soviet Union
- Helen Lee - Evergreen State College, was honored for presenting this program (i.e. the rock opera "Seattle 1919")of popular culture and labor history during the state's centennial.
- Washington State SANE/Freeze SANE/Freeze - was given a tribute for its efforts to close down nuclear weapons plants and its opposition to African apartheid.
Welcoming Chris Hani
On April 35, 1991 the Communist Party of Washington State organized a a People's Weekly World welcoming committee for a visit to Seattle by South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani.
1996 Irene, Oscar and Elmer Dedication
