Chance Walker
Chance Walker is an Austin Texas activist.
- Since 2016 I've organized YDSA chapters while attending Hays HS, The University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University. I've also helped students start YDSA chapters at other high schools in the Texas Hill Country and universities and community colleges in Central and South Texas. I served three terms on San Antonio DSA's Steering
Committee and as an electoral coordinator for the chapter. As a member of YDSA's National Labor Committee I co-authored our first campus labor guide, helped develop our strategy to get young socialists into rank and file union jobs, and served as YDSA's rep on the DSLC Steering Committee. I've organized as an open socialist member of Students for Justice in Palestine, United Students Against Sweatshops, Students United for Planned Parenthood, Young Active Labor Leaders, TSEU-CWA Local 6186, San Antonio 4 Ferguson (Black Lives Matter), and as a union salt in the restaurant industry.[1]

On Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, the Young Democratic Socialists of America at UTSA (YDSA) held a meeting in Study Room 13 in the John Peace Library where they discussed their goals and how to achieve them.
Chance Walker, a freshman geography major, was one of the few students who helped establish the YDSA at UTSA. “We were a very small group until Bernie Sanders ran for President in 2016; at that time, the DSA went from having 6,000 members at the beginning of 2016 to at the end of 2016 we had 20,000 members.” The DSA is currently gaining on 30,000 members.
Catherine Zavaletta, a freshman art history major, is a new member to UTSA’s chapter of YDSA. “I was really interested in seeing what socialism was really about, hearing it first-hand from a socialist versus hearing it from a capitalistic society,” she said. “I understand and agree with the need to push for socialism.”[5]

Had a great May Day with Austin DSA. After a big forum on the teachers' revolt (co-sponsored by Education Austin), we went to the state capitol to protest the Republicans' attempts to prevent Texas cities from passing progressive legislation.
