Mickey Jarvis connection
Carl Zeff (Lon E.) knew Mickey Jarvis well;
- I first met Mickey in March 1969 in Austin, TX. It was the second to last time the Students for a Democratic Society would hold a national convention, the end coming in Chicago several months later, of course. Mickey was this kind of burly guy, and I saw him handing out a flyer on the steps of the building where the NC was being held. He was wearing a pin that said "Vote Communist - CPUSA". He gave me a flyer but didn't want to chat very much.
- Not long after that, as I recall, some downtown people (I being a Bronx people) got Mickey out of the CP and into RYM, or RYM II, or something like that. I sat in a primitive collective of what eventually merged with other primitive collectives to form the beginnings of the democratic centralist new left. And Mickey was a leading example of the self sacrifice that is necessary to maintain the security and integrity of an organization.
- I drove with Mickey and Marta and Kirkman to Atlanta for a RYM thing one time. Mickey drove 18 hours straight, said he couldn't be a passenger, had to drive. It was an intense weekend of genuine struggle over line. Klonsky was there and the Chicago people, Noel I. showed up, a lot of people, Avakian was there with the California BARU. Lyn and the Atlanta folks. And of course we from NY were there with some bizarre, classless platform on the woman's question, I believe it was called at the time, and it was the first time to my knowledge that a guy stood up in a left-wing configuration like that and said, "I'm queer and I'm proud." Every half hour someone would jump up and call for a women's caucus. Talk about a weekend, damn. [1]
