Cameron Orr

Cameron M. Orr is a New York State Committee member of the Communist Party USA, and leader of the Young Communist League USA.

Cameron Orr is a musician and grassroots journalist living in Brooklyn, New York. Having grown up in Sussex County, a scenic rural environment undermined by right-wing control in New Jersey, he came to New York City to study music, and graduated with a BFA in music with a minor in education from the City College of New York. The influence of progressive friends from diverse backgrounds — including people of color, women, and undocumented friends — combined with the 2008 financial crisis and entering the workforce in its wake as a public school music teacher, the outbreak of Occupy Wall Street, the #Fightfor15, the Movement for Black Lives, women’s and immigrants’ movements, and various progressive media, all persistently cleared away the fog of reactionary ideology. He first opened Marx’s Capital in 2012 (still not done), and joined the Communist Party USA in January 2016 after stumbling upon the documentary ​Seeing Red​. Still fine-tuning the balance between the Party, paying rent, music, life, and relationships, he plays on the subways of NYC and writes for PeoplesWorld.org.

“Whose vote counts? All votes count! Whose vote counts? Our vote counts!” the crowd shouted as they marched from Bryant Park to Washington Square Park in New York City—this a day after the largest voter turnout in the history of U.S. presidential elections.

A coalition of labor unions and progressive political organizations gathered at 5th Avenue November 4 2020 afternoon where militant speeches were given to a frustrated crowd. One CWA organizer said, “This may be a ‘blue state’ but voter suppression still happens here. Count every vote!” An organizer from SEIU followed up by stating, “Trump wants to stop counting the votes because it’s not convenient for him to have all of these votes counted. We must remain patient and demand that all votes be counted no matter how many lawsuits Trump throws at us and no matter how long it takes.”

The Communist Party USA’s New York District sent a contingent to the march with banners which read “Defend Democracy” and “People and Nature Before Profits.” Cameron Orr, a representative of the Young Communist League in NY stated, “It’s just too close to call in places like Nevada and Georgia. So we need to be out here every day marching, even if there are recounts in some of these states.” Justine Medina, the co-chairwoman of the NY YCL said, “I’m feeling good about this. Trump may actually lose, but he’s not going down without a fight. Biden may win, but it’s going to be challenged, so we must be ready to fight this battle until January if need be.”

Sochi Sojourn

More than 20,000 young people from over 183 countries will converge on Sochi, Russia this fall for the 19th World Festival of Youth and Students. Occurring on the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution, this year’s festival is expected to be one of the biggest in decades.

When you read People’s World from October 14-22, it will feel like you’re there too because three of our young correspondents will be bringing you daily coverage of the festival proceedings.

The delegation flew on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 13. Eight young people organized by the Communist Party USA flew to Sochi, Russia to join over 50,000 youth expected from over 183 countries for the 19th World Festival of Youth and Students (WFYS). Running from Oct. 14-22, this worldwide gathering of young leaders will engage in discussions about how to work together to solve problems of war, racism, inequality, lack of jobs and educational opportunities, and many other urgent issues.

2017’s festival will gather under the slogan “For peace, solidarity, and social justice, we struggle against imperialism – Honoring our past, we build the future!” The festival will also include sports and cultural events to further develop international friendship and solidarity.

Centered around the struggle against imperialism, fascism, and racism, and highlighting the role of the youth in the struggle for gender equality, the 19th Festival will honor the 100th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution and the 70th anniversary of the Festival Movement. It will also honor the memory of Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Fidel Castro, and Mohamed Adelaziz, leader of the Sahrawi national liberation movement against Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara, the last remaining colony in Africa.

Program themes for the 19th Festival were formulated in line with the U.N.’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On October 1st, CPUSA delegates to the festival held a send-off party in New York City to involve community partners in the Festival Movement. Participating at the event were organizers and activists from the #Fightfor15, the #CLOSErikers campaign, and Black Lives Matter. The conversation was focused on the relationship between racism and imperialism, followed by musical performances.

#CLOSErikers organizer Vidal Guzman said that mass incarceration is another example of “not putting the right investments in the community,” and that “the people closest to the problem are the people closest to the solution.” Another BLM activist requested that the delegates go to the festival to “internationalize the movement” for racial justice in the U.S.

The festival will officially start with a parade commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Other sections of the program will contain focused discussions on primary issues facing specific regions of the world.

The third day, “America Day,” under the heading “Peace, Justice, Anti-imperialism and People’s Friendship,” features a conference on the refugee crisis affecting many areas of the world and the power of solidarity. The fourth, “Africa Day,” features a conference on “the rise of fascism and anti-communism, racism, and xenophobia.” The next day, “Middle East Day,” focuses on the struggle for free and universal access to health, education, science, culture, and information.

The sixth day, “Asia Pacific Day,” will discuss youth unemployment and the precarious sitation of young workers under conditions of capitalist crisis. Addressing issues in Europe on the seventh day, the participants are scheduled to discuss the development of science and the consequences to the environment. The eighth day, “Russia Day,” spotlights the host country and includes sessions on securing access to water and opposing its privatization. A separate seminar will focus on opposition to falsify the history of World War II and attempts to equate communism and fascism.

Additional seminars will be held each day on subjects such as how to confront precariousness and youth unemployment, the role of youth in the struggle for gender equality, climate change, food sovereignty and health, and other issues.

Throughout the festival, there will be exhibitions on the Soviet Union, the victory against Nazism in 1945, the lives of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, and Mohamed Abdelaziz, and the 6th and 12th World Youth Festivals held in Moscow.

A “Regional House” (Casa Americas) will also be organized to engage in social issues and expressing solidarity with Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Cuba through book presentations, videos, speakers, music, and poetry. Cameron Orr will be giving a looping violin performance during this component.

The festival will also feature an “Anti-Imperialist International Court,” where charges are expected be brought against imperialist forces for terrorism, economic blockades, environmental destruction, and war.

17. FOR ASSESSING OUR WORLD MOVEMENT’S STRENGTHS AND SHORTCOMINGS

WHEREAS humanity faces mounting existential threats from imperialist aggressions and environmental and public-health breakdowns, and

WHEREAS capitalism creates these threats and cannot stop their escalation. and

WHEREAS only the world working class can lead initiatives among the oppressed masses to decisively address these threats, and

WHEREAS labor’s organizations worldwide, including our parties, unions, and states, have identical interests in the global class struggle,

BE IT RESOLVED that the 31st National Convention direct the International Department of the Communist Party USA to support efforts to identify the strengths and shortcomings of international communism from the Comintern to the contemporary international movement of our parties worldwide, and to address the implications for international transition from capitalism to socialism.
