Standing for AD 2

In 2019 Stuart Altschuler stood from AD 2 for the California Democratic Party Central Committee.

Stuart Altschuler, LMFT has been a practicing psychotherapist since graduating from Long Island University with his Master’s Degree in Counseling in 1974. In February, 1975, he moved to Florida and worked as a psychotherapist in Substance Abuse treatment programs and was Executive Director of the LINK Foundation for three years. In both agency work and in private practice, he worked with a number of Vietnam War veterans. Upon moving to California in July 1986, he became licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist.

During most of his 21 years in Los Angeles, he worked closely with individuals and agencies dealing with the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This meant he was politically active to move the government to acknowledge people with HIV/AIDS and for them to be more supportive. He also was supporting and caring for hundreds in the community who were ill or dying.

In 1991, Stuart was a delegate to the second annual Soviet-American Citizens Summit Meeting in Moscow. This led to creating and running a non-profit joint venture (with Soviet counterparts) called the International AIDS Project which provided AIDS education and awareness programs in the Soviet Union and former Soviet republics after the break up.

In 2007, Stuart moved to Ferndale, in Humboldt County. He has been teaching, as an Associate Faculty, at College of the Redwoods Community College in Eureka, CA. He teaches in the Addiction Studies Program which trains new addiction counselors. Many students are in recovery themselves, as well as many veterans of the conflicts in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. He works closely with the campus Vet Center and its director.

As a student in college from 1968-72, Stuart was activated to work for an end to the Vietnam War, civil rights and LGBT rights.

Since the Trump inauguration, Stuart has been a very active member of Indivisible Ferndale and worked hard to elect two new members of the College of the Redwoods Board of Trustees and worked to help change the complexion of the Ferndale City Council membership. [1]
