Stephanie Hansen

Stephanie Hansen (born July 24, 1961) is an American politician elected to the Delaware State Senate as a Democrat. She was born in Limestone, Maine; currently she lives in Middletown, at the south end of the 10th State Senate District. In 2017 she won a special election to fill the seat of Bethany Hall-Long, who had resigned to take office as the state's lieutenant governor.

Prior to being elected to the state senate, she had served a single term as president of the New Castle County Council. Her earlier career as an environmental scientist with Delaware's state government led her to attend law school. Since obtaining her degree in that field she has been an environmental lawyer with two Delaware firms, most recently Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor in Wilmington.

Background

Stephanie Hansen graduated from Seaford High School, the University of Delaware and received my law degree at Widener’s Delaware Law School.

Like all parents, I wanted the best for my children’s future, and began fighting for it on multiple fronts. My introduction to public service came when I formed my local civic organization in Frenchtown Woods to advocate for school bus service for our community, among other things. Later, I would partner with other community leaders to create the Bear/Glasgow Council of Civic Organizations, which connected communities in a rapidly changing part of the 10th District. I was also proud to serve you as the President of New Castle County Council, where I worked hard to keep taxes low and preserve open space for future generations – including the tract that would eventually become Glasgow Regional Park.

In my professional life, I became an environmental attorney whose focus was on breathing new life into contaminated commercial and industrial properties by working with new businesses to grow or relocate here.

Important election

Democrat Stephanie Hansen won the special election for the 10th District Senate seat Saturday, capturing 58 percent of the votes cast and preserving her party's control of the Legislature.

The race drew national attention and donations from across the country. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley both campaigned on Hansen's behalf in the weeks leading up to the election.

National Democrat-aligned groups like the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee and EMILY's List solicited donations for Hansen.[2]

Flippable support

Flippable, which raises money for state legislative races, and the Sister District Project, which helps activists from liberal enclaves connect with competitive contests elsewhere, teamed up to funnel $145,000 to Delaware state senate candidate Stephanie Hansen, whose victory in a February special election preserved Democrats' control of the chamber.[3]
