STATEMENT REGARDING ABORIGINAL LAND RIGHTS AND SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE AS CIRCULATED AT THE BROAD LEFT CONFERENCE

Saqwertyuiopkj.PNG

We, the undersigned, participants in the Broad Left Conference, as either representatives and members of trade unions and progressive movements and political parties around Australia, or as individuals with a commitment to social and economic justice, call on the Government and the people of Australia to recognise and support the just claims of Aboriginal and Islander people for the recognition of their sovereignty, land rights and compensation for lands lost and for social and cultural disruption.

We believe that the granting of land rights and appropriate compensation is of fundamental importance as we approach the bicentennial of the invasion of Aboriginal land.

We recognise that this invasion was illegal and that there has been no attempt by any colonial administration or Federal Government to legitimise this illegal occupation by negotiating a proper and acceptable agreement with Aboriginal and Islander people, by any constitutional or legal means.

We regard the implementation by the Federal Government of legislation for land rights and compensation acceptable to Aboriginal and Islander people throughout Australia as an absolute minimal requirement as the bicentennial approaches.

We call on the Federal Government, in consultation with Aboriginal representative groups, such as Land Councils and other national Aboriginal organisations, to formulate a national strategy for implementation of appropriate land rights legislation.

As an immediate step we call on the Federal Government, in consultation with Aboriginal representative groups, to implement a Government-funded advertising and education campaign to counteract the racist and divisive propaganda of the mining industry and other groups opposed to Aboriginal demands for justice.

In expressing our support for Aboriginal people, we pledge, in consultation with Aboriginal representative bodies, all appropriate means as individuals, or as members of trade unions, political parties or other groups, to achieve justice for Aboriginal and Islander Australians.
