Palestine rally
October 28, 2023, over 300 people attended a joint solidarity march linking the struggle against U.S. imperialism in both Haiti and Palestine. The event called for an end to U.S. support for the UN intervention in Haiti, and an end to continued U.S. funding of genocide in Palestine.
The march showed support for the “Zone of Peace” campaign led by the Black Alliance for Peace in response to the UN vote on October 3 which approved a foreign-led intervention in the sovereign affairs of Haiti, whose people recently ousted the illegitimate Prime Minister Ariel Henry from office. However, due to the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine by the Israeli government, the event served a dual purpose in order to draw people of both struggles together and to show how they are linked within the broader fight against war and imperialism.
The Milwaukee Anti-War Committee (MAC) organized the event, which was co-hosted with Black Youth Project 100 – Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racism and Political Repression (MAARPR), the Milwaukee Chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), the Pan-African Revolutionary Socialist Party, the UW-Milwaukee chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, and Freedom Road Socialist Organization - Wisconsin (FRSO-WI).
A crowd of protesters composed of many in both the Muslim and Black communities and their allies gathered at Red Arrow Park in downtown Milwaukee, known as the location where Dontre Hamilton was extrajudicially executed by Milwaukee police in 2014. They enthusiastically took to the streets, marching to the U.S. Courthouse and Federal Office Building on Wisconsin Avenue. Dozens of Palestinian flags and the sounds of pro-Palestine and pro-Haiti slogans filled the streets, including, “From Haiti to Falastin, end the U.S. war machine!”
Kareem Sarsour of AMP said, “United, that’s our strength, when we stand together!”
“This is a crucial moment to not look away. We must connect these struggles because we are not alone in this fight!” said Sara Onitsuka of MAC, “There is no bomb more powerful than the collective will of the people!”
“Malcolm X put it simply: 'Freedom by any means necessary, justice by any means necessary, equality by any means necessary!'” said Ryan Hamann from FRSO-WI. “We have a duty to the people of the world who suffer under the boot of U.S. imperialism to fight, and we have a duty to win!”
“The same thing that is happening to us in Milwaukee is the same thing happening to others all over the world!” exclaimed Aurelia Ceja of MAARPR. “Please get involved and take action!”
This protest was the third this month coordinated by MAC, the previous two working alongside AMP as part of the newly formed Wisconsin Coalition for Justice in Palestine, which includes over 34 organizations in the Wisconsin area.[1]
Coalition to March on the DNC
The first meeting for the Coalition to March on the DNC took place on the evening of October 11 2019, concluding with a demonstration and rally. The coalition is comprised of many progressive activist groups united around nine demands - or points of unity - that serve as a basis and also a guide to action. Some of these points are “Legalization for all; no more deportations” and “Fight to expand union and worker rights.”
The coalition plans to march during the Democratic National Convention next July. Though a request for a permit to march has been submitted, the coalition is still awaiting a response from the city of Milwaukee. It has been months since the request was made. The coalition is prepared to pressure them on the issue.
The meeting itself was brief. It began at Milwaukee’s City Hall to discuss the points of unity as well as a set of principles designed to keep the coalition cohesive over the coming months. Around 40 activists from a variety of groups across Milwaukee and the broader Wisconsin and Midwest areas were in attendance.
After the meeting, coalition members took to the sidewalks, walking alongside a portion of the proposed route they hope to march in July. There were a number of chants reflecting the points of unity, as well as the frustration over the delayed permits. They chanted “What do we want? Permits! When do we want them? Now!”
The demonstration finished at Dontre Hamilton (or Red Arrow) Park, where several speakers voiced their support of the coalition, as well as their anger with the hypocrisy of the Democratic Party’s actions. Many speakers also touched on the specific conditions of Milwaukee, from the increasing police budget to the lack of urgency to address the city’s lead water pipes.
Ryan Hamann, one of the lead organizers of the Coalition and member of Freedom Road Socialist Organization, stated, “The purpose of our action here today was to bring our people together and show the city that we mean business.”
“Mayor Barrett and the city of Milwaukee are quick to roll out the red carpet for the rich and powerful while putting up roadblocks for activists here,” Hamann continued. “Milwaukee is our town and we’re going to march whether the city government permits us to or not.”[2]
Anti-Trump rally
40 people gathered to protest the Trump regime in downtown Oshkosh, Jan. 20, 2018 to mark one year since his inauguration. Protesters hailed from a variety of groups: a community group called United Action Oshkosh (UAO), others from a local weekly rally group, a few from University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), and some unaffiliated with any groups. The demonstration itself was co-organized by SDS and UAO.
Ryan Hamann, a leader from Students for a Democratic Society, began the protest.
Another leader from SDS, Dan Pratt, took the megaphone next and laid into Trump.
Taking the event to its conclusion was Zach Herriges, a freshman SDS leader, with a fiery speech in which he condemned Trump as a fraud. He pushed his attack forward, taking aim at a deeper target. "What we want is not a different president who will take [Trump's] place and do the same things; what we want is fundamental change to this system. It's not gonna come from an election every four years; it's gonna come from the masses of people who organize and struggle to bring change, and that's what we're doing today! Agitate, educate, organize! Together we can make this world a better place. Down with the Trump regime! Down with this system! And down with the empire!"[3]
