Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Kihuen is the son of Mexican immigrants that moved to the United States to find better opportunities for their children, taking advantage of President Reagan’s amnesty program. Arriving in the United States, his father, once a professor in Mexico, worked as a laborer and his mother as a housekeeper. Ruben is a classic American success story who came from modest circumstances to succeed. He understands what middle class families go through every day in this country.
Before running for state senate, Ruben attended University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he received a bachelor’s degree in education. After school, he worked at the College of Southern Nevada for over a 10 year period, helping students find good careers. With the Culinary Union’s backing, he decided to run for the State Assembly, beating the well-funded incumbent in his first election.

After two terms in the State Assembly, Ruben ran for the State Senate, becoming the first immigrant to be elected to the body. During his time in Senate, Ruben founded the Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus, and served in a leadership position as the Democratic Whip. Senator Harry Reid is a strong supporter of Ruben’s bid for Congress.

Kihuen is a forceful advocate of the Iran nuclear deal. Notably, Ruben was one of the first state senators to support the deal in the legislature. Ruben is a strong believer in the importance of diplomacy over the use of military force. He supports the Kissinger-Shultz-Nunn-Perry vision of moving responsibly toward a world free of nuclear weapons, reducing the nuclear weapons budget, and believes that U.S.military spending is too high.
