Tunnels Were Built To Protect Hamas Fighters, Not Civilians

From MEMRI:[1]

"Mousa Abu Marzouk, a member of the Hamas Political Bureau said in an October 27, 2023 interview that aired on Russia Today TV that the tunnels in Gaza were built to protect Hamas fighters from airstrikes, not civilians. He added that Hamas fights Israel from within the tunnels. Abu Marzouq added that since 75% of the residents in the Gaza Strip are refugees, it is the responsibility of the United Nations to protect them. He added that according to the Geneva Conventions, it is the responsibility of the "occupation" to provide civilians in Gaza "will all the services," as long as they are under occupation.

  • Interviewer: "Many people are asking: Since you have built 500 kilometers of tunnels, why haven't you built bomb shelters, where civilians can hide during bombardment?"
  • Mousa Abu Marzouk: "We have built the tunnels because we have no other way of protecting ourselves from being targeted and killed. These tunnels are meant to protect us from the airplanes. We are fighting from inside the tunnels.

  • Mousa Abu Marzouk: "Everybody knows that 75% of the people in the Gaza Strip are refugees, and it is the responsibility of the United Nations to protect them. According to the Geneva Convention, it is the responsibility of the occupation to provide them with all the services as long as they are under occupation."

Russia is Hamas 'Closest Friend'

After meeting Russian officials in Moscow after the October 7, 2023 terror attack on Israel, Moussa Abu Marzouq "praised Moscow's positions, saying that active Russian diplomacy 'is working to put an end to Israeli crimes.'" Further, the Hamas terrorist referred to Russia as Hamas's "closest friend".[2],[3]

Meetings in Moscow

  • October, 2023: "Vladimir Putin sought to intervene in the Middle Eastern conflict on Thursday by inviting senior Hamas and Iranian leaders to Moscow. In a move condemned by Israel as an 'obscene step' that 'gives support to terrorism', Russian officials met with the terror group who praised them for taking an 'active role' in the war. Ali Bagheri Kani, the deputy foreign minister of Iran, the main foreign sponsor of Hamas, was also in Moscow for talks...A photograph released by Hamas showed Bassem Naeem, its head of international relations, and Mousa Abu Marzouk, a senior member of the Hamas politburo, in a meeting with Mikhail Bogdanov, Putin’s special envoy in the Middle East. Western observers said the meetings suggested Putin had abandoned his long-standing alliance with Israel in favour of closer ties with Iran and its Islamist allies, who carried out the Oct 7 terror attacks on Israel and have stepped up a bombing campaign on American troops in the wider Middle East..."[4]

CAIR connection

Evidence linking CAIR and its founders to a Hamas-support network has been released through court action. That evidence prompted the FBI to cut off its outreach with the group. In 2010, the DOJ said it had seen no "new evidence that exonerates CAIR from the allegations that it provides financial support to designated terrorist organizations."

CAIR was listed among organizations belonging to an umbrella group of Hamas-support entities in the United States called the Palestine Committee. In addition, CAIR founders Nihad Awad and Omar Ahmed were included alongside senior Hamas officials such as Mousa Abu Marzook and Ahmed Yousef on a telephone list of individual Palestine Committee members.

That evidence was released in the terror-financing trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) in Dallas.[7],[8]

Circa 1994:

Leader in US-based Hamas Fronts

An article titled "Hamas Deputy Chief Settled U.S. Funding Dispute" dated September 30, 2008, reveals that Hamas leader Moussa Abu Marzouq was deeply involved in negotiating on behalf of the Palestine Committee, a "group created by the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S. to help Hamas".[9],[10]

"DALLAS – A turf war between competing U.S.-based Palestinian charities in 1994 was settled by Mousa Abu Marzook, a Hamas leader who serves as its deputy political director.
In testimony Tuesday, jurors in the Hamas-support trial of five former officials at the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) heard FBI recordings showing Marzook sided with the foundation over an Oxford, Mississippi-based educational fund. HLF, prosecutors say, then became the designated fundraising arm for Hamas in the United States.
The first attempt to settle the dispute between the Texas-based HLF and the Al Aqsa Education Fund first was handled by the Palestine Committee, a group created by the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S. to help Hamas. It included HLF, the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP) and a think tank called the United Association for Studies and Research (UASR). Marzook had personal and financial ties with all three entities.
