Failed sister city bid

Fakhouryu.png

November 2014 at an Ocala City Council meeting, Manal Fakhoury of Fakhoury Leadership International, who is Palestinian and who has lived in Ocala for many years and has participated in many local activities, proposed that Ocala and Ramallah become linked together for humanitarian purposes through Sister Cities International and asked for a letter of support.

But Fakhoury’s request was met with strong opposition, not only from members of the community, but from Mayor Kent Guinn, who refused to accept a book that reportedly was a gift from the mayor of Ramallah.

Guinn placed a photo on the overhead screen showing Fakhoury sitting at a desk with photos on the wall behind her of Mamoud Abbas, the chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and Yasser Arafat, former chairman of the PLO.

“These are things I am concerned about, are the ties of Ramallah, Manal, and this group of people like pictured there,” Guinn said.

He added, “I am not going to pursue having a sister cities, twinning relationship, whatever you want to call it, for a lot of reasons, this being one of them.”[3]
